WAR DOG LEADS ALL THE WAY Falaise Stable Three-Year-Old in Impressive 1939 Debut. One By One Finishes Three Lengths Behind Victor — Gannet Buns Five Furlongs in :58£. NEW YORK, N. T., May 2.— War Dog, a son of Bull Dog — Flying Shot which is one of the better regarded three-year-olds in the Falaise Stable of Harry Guggenheim, turned in a fine performance in his first outing of the season to defeat three rivals in the Black Stock Purse, the mile and a sixteenth event which was todays principal attraction at the Jamaica course. Making the running for the entire journey, the brown fellow passed the winning post three lengths in advance of Greentree Stables One by One, with Equestrian four lengths farther away as he outlasted Tall Story for third honors. The successful colt always was in considerable demand in the market, opening at 3 to 1 and closing at the same price. Last season he was able to win two of five starts, with his inaugural effort suggesting improvement over the winter. He covered the mile and one-sixteenth in 1:44% with something to spare. In taking the measure of One by One he whipped a well-fancied public choice, the fourth of the afternoon to fail. LONGDEN ALEBT. Longden had War Dog away fast to take command at the first turn. He steadied his charge along until Arcaro started his run at the turn out of the back stretch and then drove him with hand and heel to dispose of the Equipoise colt by the time the top of the stretch was reached. In the front lane he drew off with scant difficulty. One by One, rated for the first half mile, was under pressure thereafter but could never threaten the leader. Arcaro had him under punishment a quarter of a mile from the finish, but to no avail. His mount was much the best of the other two starters, however. Equestrian, a son of Equipoise like the runner-up, probably needs mud to bring out his best. Tall Story, fractious at the post, finally was banished outside the stalls. He broke well enough but stumbled and went to his knees after taking a few strides. That eliminated the Questionnaire colt, though he finished gamely to miss third money by a head margin. GANNET GOOD PBOSPECT. Gannet stamped himself a mighty sweet prospect for next Wednesdays Youthful Stakes when he galloped off with principal honors in the five furlongs Setauket Purse. Ben Whitakers colt turned in decidedly the best race of the meeting at the distance when he completed his journey in :58%, which was only a fifth of a second off the track record. As he passed the judges the bay son of Okapi and Willet was three lengths in advance of Ranchos Girl, with that filly taking the place from Evil Spirit by five. It was the second straight triumph for the Texan, which ruled a heavily supported choice, going to the post at even money after opening at 9 to 5. The opening race was a six furlongs dash for cheap three-year-olds and it went to Mrs.. Clara Lyons Cantovino, with Mrs. Clyde Phillips Peon taking second place and M. Van Beurens Bee Bright beating Bissakerry, a slight favorite over the winner, for the shoj-t end of the purse. Basil James rode the winning filly. Turning into the stretch James drew away still farther with Cantovino and right at the end, while Peon was closing some ground after having come from behind Bee Bright, the winning margin was a length and a half. Bee Bright was a like distance back of Peon and Bissakerry was right at the heels of the Sting miss. SPLIT RACE. j The second was a split of the first offering and it went to Clarence Buxtons Mikes Grace, ridden by Don Meade, with Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Henryels Pick taking second place from the Paragon Stables Giboir, the 9 to 10 favorite of the field. The winner went to the post at 6 to 1 and won rather handily. Three furlongs from the finish Giboir was going so well that it seemed certain he would run down Mikes Grace, but as Nash shook him up Meade called on the filly and she moved away again. Then in the stretch, Henryels Pick was going strongly and as Giboir faltered in the final furlong he was on by, to take the place but he was a length and a half back of Mikes Grace, though he had beaten Giboir a length. Paul Codds Strut was a repeater in the fourth, a six-furlong dash for platers when | she was winner over the Paragon Stables Family Friend, favorite of the company. Third went to Mrs. Val Cranes Neap, and Biologist was a close fourth. Nick Wall had the mount on the Codd filly and she was as good as 6 to 1 at post time. Another favorite fell by the wayside in the sixth, a gallop at a mile and a sixteenth for cheap ones, when B. F. Christmas Blond Spook led home R. Lauras Stalagmite with Bubblesome, from the Snow White Stable, third, and Caught, the favorite, doing his best to be fourth. Blond Spook went to the post at 6 to 1 while Stalagmite was the longest shot of the field. Faust had the mount on Blond Spook and he made no mistakes. Still another favorite was beaten in the final number when Isadore Biebers Panorama was whipped and a double was chalked up for Paul Codd and Nick Wall when Lucky Star beat home a lot of cheap platers at a mile and seventy yards. And five of the beaten favorites were ridden by Ronnie Nash. They were Bissakerry, Giboir, Family Friend, Caught and Panorama.
