WILL JOHNSTOWN MAKE IT? Johnstown; son of Jamestown, invaded the "dark and bloody ground" Saturday in quest of the first victory on the road to the "grand slam," which will take him through four states — Kentucky, Maryland, Illinois and New York. "Grand slammers" at present are limited to two, Gallant Fox and Omaha, and they carried the same colors that Johnstown bears in his quest of fame. The "grand slammers" got that way by winning the Derby, Preakness, Classic and Belmont Stakes. To accomplish the "grand slam" calls for a "lot" of horse, and the Derby immediately qualifies or eliminates all but one. A "slammer" is in the higher brackets of the "triple crowners," themselves an ultra-ultra exclusive society with very few members.
