MAYOR LA GUARDIA TESTIFIES WASHINGTON, D. C, May 8.— Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, of New York City, speaking for the United States Conference of Mayors, today warned the house W. P. A. investigating committee that "there isnt a city in the country which could assume the burden" of relief should congress discontinue W. P. A. "To discontinue W. P. A. would be tragic, the result would be terrible to contemplate," he said. The mayor bluntly declared: "There is not a city in the nation which can add one penny to what it is now contributing to relief. They are up to the hilt and many of them have debt limitations which puts them in a straight-jacket." He testified at the invitation of the committee. Mayors appearing with La Guardia were Herold H. Burton, Cleveland; Daniel W. Hoan, Milwaukee; Edward J. Kelly, Chicago; Joseph B. Schlotz, Louisville; Ross D. Rogers, Amarillo, Texas; Richard W. Reading, Detroit, and Maurice J. Tobin, Boston.
