, . RUSSIA AND TURKEY IN PLEDGE ANKARA, Turkey, May 8.— Controlling the entrance to the Black Sea, Turkey today announced an agreement k/ith Soviet Russia, under which it was believed the U. S. S. R. stands prepared to help Turkey defend the Dardanelles and Bosporous. Turkey, in return, would permit British naval vessels to use the Straits in common defense of the eastern Mediterranean, Rumania and Poland. Following the visit of Vladimir Potemkin, Soviet vice-commissar for foreign affairs, to Ankara, a communique said, "Russia and Turkey are determined to strengthen further the solid bonds existing between them, constituting a precious pledge to the cause of peace, to which they are firmly attached."
