" 1 PASTRY BACK IN BEST FORM Overcomes Early Lead of May R. to Win by a Length. Large Crowd in Attendance Despite Threatening Weather — Snow White Stable Sends Out Two Winners. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 8— Pastry, the veteran son of John P. Grier and Muffins, which races for S. Pisacano," was winner of the best offering of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica today. The event was a claiming race of a mile and a sixteenth for-the better platers and the old gelding led home William H. Gallaghers May R., with T. J. Healeys Black Look a close third. The only other starters were Unheralded and La Charitc. They were both soundly beaten. After the summer-like weather of Saturday there was a drop in temperature today, with threatening clouds hanging over the course all afternoon, but a good-sized crowd was out and the sport furnished was interesting. The start in the feature was not exactly a good one, for May R. was off running, while Pastry reared in the air. Longden made plenty of use of his advantage at the break with the filly, but Pastry, showing more early foot than usual, soon raced into second place. Black Look followed the old gelding and La Charite and Unheralded dropped back badly through the first half mile. RUNAWAY TACTICS FAIL. Longden sprinted May R. into a lead of seven lengths in the first half mile in a vain effort to make a runaway of it, but James, on Pastry, and Workman, on Black Look, made no effort to run her down. They were content to wait for her to come back and before the stretch was reached she began to shorten stride. Still leading into the stretch, both Pastry and Black Look were closing resolutely, and a furlong out Pastry was alongside to come on and win by a length. May R. stood the drive gamely to still have her head in front of Black Look at the line, and the Healey gelding was six lengths before Unheralded. William Wicks Maechance, a juvenile son of Chance Shot and Martinique, that had a thorough seasoning in Florida, was a cantering winner of the opening five-eighths dash that was fashioned under claiming conditions. To score, he took the measure of-Whoosh, from the Nydrie Stable, which was made favorite, and Mrs. Andy Schuttingers Baby Booties outfooted Atum Re for third. Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs old Sandy Bill was returned to sprinting and took down his fourth purse of the meeting in the six furlongs of the second race. The only race the old fellow has lost since last year was when, in his previous effort, Hirsch Jacobs asked him to race a mile and seventy yards. In this dash he was held at the prohibitive price of 1 to 4 and gave Johnny Longden an easy winning ride. William H. Berns Early Evening took second place and J. Simon Healys Tedall was rather a distant third before Eldee. MODEST QUEEN NARROWLY. Don Meade was beaten with his second favorite of the day when he could only finish fourth with Dini in the third race, another six furlongs dash. The race resulted in a close fit in which Modest Queen, from the Snow White Stable, was up in the closing strides to score over Ebony Fly, which had made all the pace. Be a Belle was third, beating Dini for that part of the purse. Johnny Longden had his second winning ride of the day when, in a stretch drive, he landed Mrs. J. Hertz Book Plate winner over Selmalad, from the Paragon Stables, while the Snow White Stables Sassy Lady readily took third from Johns Heir. This all came about in the Hazelwood Handicap, a six furlongs dash for three-year-olds in class "C." Book Plate was choice of the field, going to the post at 6 to 5. The Snow White Stable scored a double when Phenomenal, in a driving finish, took the mile and a sixteenth race at the end of the card. The other winner from the stable was Modest Queen. This final race brought an excellent finish, with City Judge taking the place and Broad Tail was third.
