GILDED KNIGHT TODAY i Johnstowns Outstanding Rival for Preakness Starts at Pimlico. Much Excitement at Baltimore Track Over Arrival of Stars for the Big Stake Races, PIMLICO, Md., May 8.— Gilded Knight, and Day Off, two Preakness candidates, will oppose five other good three-year-olds in tomorrows renewal of the ,500 added Survivor Stakes. The event is a mile and a sixteenth stakes feature for second seasoners and was named after the first winner of the Preakness back in 1873. The five opposing the two Preakness aspirants are Alfred G. Vanderbilts Trailer, winner of the Rennert Handicap a week ago; Millsdalc Stables Sun Lover; Hugh W. Jacksons Ariel Toy, winner of the Arkansas Derby; Howard Bruces General Mowlee and the Wheatley Stables Sea Captain. The latter is a stablemate of Gilded Knight and will be recalled for his excellent showing in the Rennert last Tuesday, when he ran second to Trailer after being left at the post. The Belair Stud-Wheatley Stable entry, trained by "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, will undoubtedly be the favorite in the wagering. Gilded Knight is currently considered the chief opposition to Johnstown in the Preakness. He was the winner of the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace and, despite the fact they are conditioned by the same trainer, neither has worked together in race trials. Two of Tuesdays events are for fillies. The first race is for maiden two-year-old fillies at a distance of four and a half furlongs and the fourth the second division of the same race. The steeplechase feature, third on the days card, attracted eight entries, including the opening day winner of the jumping race, Angus. Old Pimlico took on an air of excitement today with the inaugural of the years most important week of horse racing. Over a dozen important stakes horses arrived this morning, among them the principal contenders for the Dixie Handicap and the Preakness. Johnstown headed the group, with Challedon, Day Off, Gilded Knight, Volitant, T. M. Dorsett and Challenge here for the Preakness. The handicap division was given greater prestige with the arrival yesterday of Tatterdemalion, Jacola and Sir Damion.
