Favored Johnstown Fails in the Mud After Leading fori a Mile to Finish in Fifth Place — Large Crowd Present Despite Continuous Downfall of Rain BALTIMORE, Md., May 13.— Clialledon, best horse produced in Maryland in many years, captured the states greatest test for three-year-olds, the time-honored Preakness stakes at old Pimlico this afternoon, as 30,000 persons dumbfoundedly saw Johnstown fail to establish himself as an all-around champion through inability to last the mile and three-sixteenths of muddy going. Maryland truly praised Clialledon for his brilliant victory, as the fine bay son of Challenger II. and Laura Gal was bred at William L. Branns Glade Valley Farm, some seventy miles from here and sported his red and yellow silks, in the forty-ninth Tunning of the Preakness today. Challedons triumph was gained in conclusive fashion 1 ■" ■■■ygS 1 _1_J? J__J! • T 1 "I TT- • 1. -mi- 1 _1_J? J__J! • T 1 "I TT- • 1. -mi- as he defeated Gilded Knight, Mrs. Harry C. Phipps Wheatley Stable colorbearer, by a length and one-quarter: Volitant, representing the Saratoga Stable of George Bull and John A. Morris, was third, another three lengths back, and possessing a similar advantage over Alfred G. Vanderbilts Impound. The supposedly invincible Johnstown was a staggering fifth, some four lengths farther away, and only a neck in front of the filly Ciencia. By his victory in the seasons richest three-year-old race, Challedon enriched Mr. Brann to the extent of 3,710, as Mrs. Phipps received 0,000, Bull and Morris §5,000, and Vanderbilt ,000. Challedon now has earned 28,910, of which 7,700 was collected last season when he won the Pimlico, Maryland and New England Futurities. RUNNER-UP IN DERBY. Challedon was runner-up to Johnstown in the Kentucky Derby, although soundly beaten on a fast track. He was vastly superior to William Woodwards flyer today as well as being th master of the others on the muddy traclt; the result of a steady rain from mid-morning through mid-afternoon. He was sent out foi his greatest accomplishment by trainer Louis Schaefer, who as a jockey ten years ago piloted Dr. Freeland to a Preakness score. George Seabo, who has guided the Maryland-bred in all his .engagements since last fall, donned the Brann silks again, and he made no mistakes with his brilliant mud-running mount. Challedon, asserting his superiority in the final quarter of a, mile, covered the Preakness distance in the creditable time of 1:594,£, carrying scale weight of 126 pounds, as did his five opponents. With the track condition changing unexpectedly from yesterday, the Belair-Wheatley entry of Johnstown and Gilded Knight went to the post at 45 to 100 as Challedon was installed the second choice. NOT PARTIAL TO MUD. Johnstown demonstrated early in the race that he wasnt as partial to the mud as his admirers had hoped as he was unable to draw away from the field in the early part, after breaking in front. The start was a good one, although Volitant delayed it for five and one-half minutes. As the field came down the home straightaway for the first time, Jimmy Stout rated Johnstown slightly more than a length ahead of Gilded Knight as Ciencia was third and Challedon fourth on the inside. As the Preakness field paraded to the post, the rain, which had fallen almost steadily since mid-morning, had ended and persons dropped their umbrellas in order I that everyone could have a better chance to view the race. With the crowd some 10,000 short of expectations due to the rain, the terrace was not as crowded as it otherwise would have been, nor was the gathering in the centerfield nearly as great as has been noted on previous Preakness days. Despite the change in track conditions, trainer James Fitzsimmons withdrew Challenge this morning, leaving Johnstown to sport the Belair Stud silks alone, although it was the first he had been called upon to race in any other going than fast. Whatever intentions the Maryland Jockey Club may have had of eliminating show wagering were dispelled by the rain, as they considered the chances of a minus pool to be minimized. SHOW MTJTTJEL PERMITTED. Announcement was made by officials at 1:20 p. m. that show betting would be permitted on the Preakness Stakes despite the small field, which included the entry sent postward by J. Fitzsimmons. Closing with a great rush on the inside rounding the last turn, Chester F. Hockleys Trolight won the Penn Athletic Club Steeplechase which opened the program. The Trojan gelding with J. Penrod up scored by three lengths over Kenneth N. Gilpins Buck Langhorne as O. D. Filleys Sisyphus was another four lengths away. The latter two were coupled and went post-ward as the choice. H. L. Straus Coursing, beaten off in his last race, closed steadily on the outside to take the second race by a length over Chata-bit as War Grand was another length back. Maewhisk, the favorite, was fourth in the field of nine lowly three-year-old platers. Under Irving Anderson, Coursing was rated in near pursuit of the pace until reaching the stretch, where the Purchase — Bonnie Brook gelding gradually wore down Chata-bit, War Grand and Maewhisk. Dinamita tired badly after setting the pace during the opening half mile. BY LENGTH MARGIN. Jadaan, the slight favorite, carried the L. L. Westmoreland silks to a length triumph over Oddesa Lad in the third race as Idyllic was two and a half lengths farther back. Eight ordinary platers composed the field for the six furlong dash, with Tutti-curio finishing fourth after being pinched back at the start. George Seabo rated the veteran Carlaris gelding in fifth place until leaving the back stretch, thereafter gaining steadily to collar Oddesa Lad and Idyllic in the final sixteenth. The latter weakened after setting the pace until challenged in the stretch.. Anderson completed a double in piloting T. D. Buhls Domkin to a head verdict over Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Paradise Girl in the fourth race as La Scala, representing H. L. Straus, was another length and a half away and well before Stepinfred. Ten likely juveniles went postward in the dash of four and one-half furlongs and Dark Rapture , drew the most support. Mrs. A. J. Abels Sir Mowlee, a co-favorite with Little Pinkey, led all the way over the six furlongs course in the fifth event, reaching the end a length and a half in front of R. B. Archers Rosepillar. Mrs. H. Goods Many Flags was another half length back and well before Key Man. Nine likely three-year-olds composed the lineup.
