SEA CAPTAIN SUPERIOR Wins Swift Stakes for the Wheatley Stable at Belmont Park. Perida Accounts for Fashion Stakes — C. V. Whitneys Colors Seen in Action Again. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 13.— While the star three-year-olds in Jim Fitzsimmons big establishment were busily engaged at Pim-lico today, Sea Captain ably looked after the reputation of the horses left at home when he was winner of the old Swift Stakes at Belmont Park under the silks of Mrs. H. C. Phipps Wheatley Stable. The son of Hard Tack accounted for his first stake victory in this seven furlongs sprint for three-year-olds, which had its first running fifty-four years ago at Sheepshead Bay. This stake was one of the features of a dismal afternoon for the first Saturday of the meeting. The other was the Fashion Stakes of honored age, and it went to Joseph E Wideners Perida. It was unfortunate that the first Saturday of the Westchester Association meeting should have been marred by inclement conditions. The weather was unseasonably cold and most of the afternoon there was a drizzle of rain that kept the big crowd in the shelter of the stands. Despite these conditions the sport offered was of the first quality, and it was well received. TEN GO TO THE POST. Ten went to the post for the Swift Stakes, and it resulted in. one of several upsets of the day. Sea Captain was held at 5 to 1 in the betting, while Lovely Night, the favorite, could only finish fourth. The place went to Alfred G. Vanderbilts Trailer, one of the long shots, and Robert Harris* Tiberius, which was third, was also neglected in the betting. Hants caused some delay at the post and he was sent outside the machine by Cassidy before he had an alignment to his liking. The start was good, but Selmalad at once I bolted out badly and was pulled up by j Peters. Hants left running from the outside | and showed the way, closely attended by] War Dog and Lovely Night, while Tiberusj and Chant dOr were not far off following the break. Hants did not last long in command and then it was Book Plate that dashed through to show his head before War Dog, which was racing well in a rail position. Sea Captain was begininng to improve his position and Haas was sending him along on the outside. RUNS INTO INTERFERENCE. It was leaving the back stretch that War Dog ran into some interference and as he was crowded back he lost much ground. Then Wall moved with Lovely Night and he raced by Book Plate to show in the lead. : For an instant it appeared the Pilate coltj would come on to win, but he began to bear j out badly and he continued to go out until J he had lost much grund and all his winning! " chance had vanished. Lovely Night went out, there was a general closing up inside of him, and Sea Captain, a furlong from the finish, had come into the contention definitely. In the run through the last furlong he took command and standing a drive gamely he had a length to spare at the end. Tiberius was going well in second place until Sammy Renick brought Trailer along with a mighty rush right at the end to earn that share of the in purse a close decision. | | IMPROVED PERFORMANCE. Perida showed an improved effort when she won her second race in as many starts for Joseph E. Widener, in taking the Fashion Stakes to add ,250 to her earnings. She won this four and a half furlongs stake for the juvenile fillies so impressively that she may prove one of the truly good ones of the new crop. She went to the post at 6 to 1, after having opened at 4 to 1, and to score she easily led home Wm. H. Gallaghers Us, the favorite. Ranchos Girl, from the War-bcrn Stable, was third over Piquet, that raced for the Greentree Stable. Perida went into an early lead and she had foot enough to dominate the running all the way. Wayne Wright had her under slight restraint as she held her command and when he permitted her to extend herself in the final furlong she drew out until her winning margin was three lengths. No good excuse could be found for Us, which soon found her way into second place, but was utterly unable to run down the daughter of Chance Shot, though she readily saved the place from Ranchos Girl. BEHAVES BADLY. George D. Wideners Spanked behaved so badly at the post that she was banished to a position outside the starting machine. Though off well enough she had no speed and quickly dropped out of the running. The Fashion Stakes marked the return of I the C. V. Whitney silks to racing when he sent out Black Gnat, a daughter of Chicle and Flyatit. She is a half-sister to Top Flight, one of the great fillies to carry the light blue and brown cap. This filly is under sized and about as unimpressive as was her illustrious sister as a juvenile, but her race was also unimpressive when she finished last of the ten that performed. She appeared to be excessively green and will doubtless improve over her showing.
