| CURTAILMENT IN CALIFORNIA] I RACING DATES NEXT SEASON] ■ ■* LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 13.— Members of the recently appointed California Horse Racing Board have plainly indicated during the last few weeks that the number of racing days will be materially curtailed next year. This because of the tendency of some factions of business to blame racing for any and all decreases in general business conditions. Though it is not expected that the 1940 racing dates will be forthcoming until midsummer, there has been a rumor going the rounds that Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, the two big tracks in point of patronage and handle, will be cut to about forty days each, and that Tanforan, Bay Meadows and Del Mar may be trimmed down in proportion. Heretofore Santa Anita has enjoyed between fifty and sixty days each winter, whereas Hollywood Park operated thirty-three days last summer but will run forty-six days during the meeting, which opens May 30. Edward R. Young, chairman of the board, declined today to make a statement of the boards intentions, but admitted that he has noticed a well defined drift in public opinion towards a curtailment of the racing time. California this year has scheduled more days of racings than any state in the Union.
