1 CHURCHILL DOWNS NOTES I ® « S. Sewell Combs, a member of the Kentucky Racing Commission and formerly owner of one of the leading mid-western stables, motored from Lexington Saturday to witness the running of the sixty-fifth Kentucky Oaks. Mary Jane, winner, of the 1927 renewal of the Oaks, was owned by Mr. Combs and Allan Gallaher and was trained by Mr. Combs. The locally-owned stable of Mrs. Louise J. Hickman and Baylor O. Hickman, will invade Delaware Park for the first time this year. The small but well balanced establishment is headed by Arabs Arrow. He was winner of the Clark Handicap and also dead-heated Kings Blue for major honors in the Churchill Downs Handicap. Others that will be in charge of former jockey Gilbert Hardy are Dusty Dawn, Portmora, Tyr, Stjensund, Avesta and two unnamed two-year olds. Keene Daingerfield, Jr., will take twenty-two horses from here to North Randall Park after the close of the current meeting. The Daingerfield stable includes thirteen juveniles, the older Gene -Wagers, Star Banner and seven three-year-olds. William Kenney, young Kentucky horseman and brother of Charles Kenney, manager of the breeding division of Coldstream Stud, saddled his first winner when Valvesta won the eighth race Friday. Valvesta is the property of William Kenney, Sr., and was foaled at the Kenney farm near Paris, Ky. In addition to Serenata Maid, Stanislaus and Miss Wise, which he has quartered here, J. G. McAtee will take Corner Boy and Maid Marie to North Randall Park. The latter pair are the property of M. J. Bransfield and are at Keeneland Park in charge of Andrew Ayres. Ralph Mcllvain will ship the seven horses he has here to Detroit Wednesday. The useful stable is topped by Radio Gold, which finished second to Ariel Toy in the Arkansas Derby. Negotiations are under way for the signing of Willie Lee Johnson by John B. Partridge, whose stable is in New York. If the deal is consummated Johnson will report to Partridge when his contract with Mrs. R. J. Murphy expires the last of this month.
