Five Oppose Daily Dip in Berkley Bedwell Colt Aims j For Repeat Score Engages Jack S.L., Galloway, Gay Secret in Seven-Eighths Event at Arlington Park ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, Dl., June 28. H. Guy Bedwell, Savage, Md., turfman, who seven times during his long and meteoric career has led the trainers of America in saddling winners, has earned great recognition for his ability to acquire cast-offs, then develop them into first-rate performers. In the Berkley Purse tomorrow, Bedwell will saddle his own Daily Dip, who is a C. V. Whitney discard that has shown great improvement under the Old Line staters handling. Daily Dip will face a small but very capable field that will compete at seven furlongs. His foremost foe is Mrs. J. S.Letelliers Jack S. L., while the others are J. H. Skir-vins Nina Bruja, Johnny McShanes Gay Secret and Dixianas Galloway. Daily Dip has made one start at the local course and he showed the finest performance, since Bedwell acquired him from the Whitney stable early in the year. The four-year-old son of Mahmoud Dipsy Doodle, by Equipoise breeding that hardly can be bettered, merely galloped to defeat Bullish, Dimit, Proud Ruler, Snow Boots, Coley Bay and Lookout Son. He won by three lengths and was ridden by Freddie Smith, the same saddlemite listed to ride tomorrow. Taking Place of Prognosis Daily Pip raced fairly well in the East before coming here. He was purchased by Bedwell after the swamp fever epidemic in New England last season virtually wiped out the stable. The star of the barn, Prognosis, was insured for 0,000 and it was with the money received from that horse that Bedwell purchased Daily Dip. Prognosis was a stakes winner and Bedwell seems to think that Daily Dip, his substitute, may prove a better thoroughbred. Jack S. L., who possibly will be favored in the Berkley, is an eight-year-old who stands up under hard campaigning year after year. Last season he started no less than 25 times and he won a total of 8,995 in purses. Already this year he has completed in 13 races and his general form indicates that he is just as good as ever, in spite of a comparatively poor recent effort in the Lincoln Handicap during the Lincoln-at-Washington meeting. At the Fair Grounds in New Orleans he won ,a couple of handicaps and during the Churchill Downs meeting finished second to Star Reward in the Clark Handicap. Although throughout his career, Jack S. L, has run against the best horses of America at all distances, the general belief has been that he is best suited at a mile or less. He gets in the sprint with 114 pounds, three less than is to be shouldered by Daily Dip, the high weight. The race also will mark the first start in this country of the Argentina-bred Nina Bruja. She is a five-year-old chestnut mare and is reported to possess considerable class. Hedley Woodhouse who has been riding in good form this year, will handle the invader. Gay Secret is a speedy type who seems well suited by the conditions of the Berkley.
