Twelve Starters Seen For Select Handicap Turner Makes Prediction After Survey of Eligibles for Race MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 28. The 0,000 Select Handicap, first of two important prep races for the 5,000 Choice Stakes, the associations principal fixture for three-year-olds, promises to bring forth a field of at least a dozen for its inaugural running here on Wednesday. The mid-week feature drew 55 nominations and racing secretary John P. Turner, Jr., in a week-end survey among owners and trainers of the various candidates, already can count on 12 starters with two others undecided at present. A six-furlong dash that is being revived for the first time since 1893, the Select is the associations first three-year-old feature and will be followed by the 5,000 Lamplighter Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth on Saturday, July 17. Both the Select and Lamplighter serve as proving grounds, so to speak, for the Choice Stakes, at a mile and a quarter, on Saturday, August 7. Likely to comprise the post parade are C. A. ONeils Galedo, a recent winner; Mrs. James V. Stewarts Dr. Almac, C. V. Whitneys Black Majesty, James Cox Bradys Basis, Woodland Farms Picture Card, Walter M. Jeffords Frenchtown, Lester Manor Stables Fugit, Maine Chance Farms Royal Blood, W. J. Waldens Circus Clown, Llangollen Farms Singing Step, Christiana Stables Anna Christie and J. M. Roeb-lings Cacique. Weights for the Select were announced Friday with King Ranchs Better Self receiving the top impost of 126 pounds. The Max Hirsch-trained youngster is a highly doubtful starter, however, and the distinction of being the starting high-weight may fall to Dr. Almac, assigned 118 pounds. Older middle distance runners will be cast in starring roles on Saturday with the second running of the 0,000 Long Branch Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth, featuring the week-end card. In the meantime, there is an excellent feature on the well-balanced program which racing secretary Turner has drawn for tomorrow. The headliner is named the Tough Club Purse and Is a one mile and a sixteenth test for four-year-olds and upward. The field comprises J. M. Roeblings Artist Life, Glen Riddle Farms Faraway, King Ranchs Better Value, Mimosa Stock Farms War Trophy, Hugh A. Grants Eb, Gettinger Stables Jingle Jangle and William Hells British Isles.
