Charleston Makes It Two For Two This Season Tavares Keeps Mount Going in Drive to Beat Tilenny by Head By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May. 26. — Charleston, Phil Schwartz hardhitting son of Some Chance, kept his 1951 record intact by scoring a neck decision over Anthony Cataldos Tilenny in the Puritan Handicap which featured todays program at Suffolk Downs. The Puritan offered another close finishr with J. W. Nizleks All At Once finishing a half length back of the runner-up and only a short nose before the favored Sedgeview from the barn of Mrs. J. Kelley. The entire field of nine starters were only five lengths apart at the finish of the mile and 70 yards event. Ideal weather prevailed tis the enthusiastic crowd of 20,882 witnessed the sport here this afternoon. Charleston was slightly overlooked despite his impressive seasonal debut four days ago and*paid 4.20. A heavy racing strip for the first couple of races turned into a slow track and by the time the Puritan was run it was termed good. The time for the mile and 70 yards was 1:43 Jockey Anthony Tavares did a good job handling Charleston. Leaving the barrier in iront, the Schwartz ridgling was kept at the throat latch of the pacesetter, All At Once. After allowing the leader to get clear on the first turn, Tavares moved his charge slightly to the outside and kept him under steadying restraint and out s of trouble. Down the backstretch, All At Once maintained his length margin as a stablemate, Teaneck Flash, drove up along the inside. Still content to allow the leaders to show the way, Tavares waited* until nearing the three-eighths pole before making his move. In the meantime, the field was beginning to bunch up and Sedgeview was caught in the shuffle and had to take to the outside losing valuable ground. Once under pressure, Charleston pinned his ears and bounded to the front. Turning into the stretch, Charleston increased his lead to a length and his rider was alert to keep after him and was rewarded by a short margin at the end. Tilennyi closer to the pace than usual, made a gallant bid, increasing momentum with each stride but the ground he was forced to lose on the outside, more than made up for the margin of defeat. All At Once appeared beaten after relinquishing command but the game colt was coming again at the end and managed to save the minor award from the onrushing Sedgeview.
