. . . . . - ■ nt FANFARE Calumet Farms Fanfare at Homewood Track to Fill Engagement in Peabody Slated to Engage Stop Gap, Ruhe and Royal Mustang in Lincolns Holiday Fixture WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, I1L, May 26. — The arrival of Calumet Farms Fanfare today to keep his engagement in Wednesdays 5,000 Peabody Memorial in which he will meet Mrs. Emil Denemarks Ruhe, Sam E. Wilsons Royal Mustang, Red Top Farms Stop Gap and other challengers for the three-year-old title, created considerable interest at Washington Park. The Peabody MerHorial brings the current Lincoln Fields meeting to its mid-season climax. The race has added importance this year due to its bearing on the nationwide contest for the three-year-old championship. Winner of the Derby Trial at Churchill Downs on May 1, Fanfare finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby behind Count Turf, Royal Mustang, Ruhe and Phil D. All but Court Turf are nominees for the Peabody. The Derby was Fanfares latest start. Prior to the Derby Trial he won an allowance race at Keeneland by six lengths. Earlier in the year he scored two victories at Santa Anita. These accomplishments stamped him as Calumets candidate for the three-year-old title. Because he is a Calumet horse and trained by Ben Jones he has and still does command respect. Stop Gaps victory over six other Peabody candidates in the "Peabody Prep" last Thursday projected the Red Top Farm colt prominently into the picture for Wednesdays big event. His victims that day included Brownell Combs Bernwood, Mrs. J. P. Keezeks Abbe Sting and Royal Mustang, John Marschs Brevite, Mrs. Nellie , Mikels False and Mrs. Freddie Sharpes Kings Hope. Royal Mustang, who finished fourth behind Stop Gap, Bernwood and Abbe Sting, had some excuse, as he was in close quarters while attempting to move on the far turn. Sam Wilson, the Texas oil man, made four nominations for the Peabody, the others being Devilnation, Bugledrums and Golden Birch. Devilnations training has been stepped up and he is a possibility as a running mate with Royal Mustang. Spring Brook Farms Pur Sang, who finished eighth in the Derby, is another Peabody candidate who is training well. Ruhe, of course, commands special attention. The Arkansas Derby winner, who was also awarded the Blue Grass Stakes, is still the choice of many astute observers to become the eventual king of the three-year-old division.
