► * Hyvania Emerges With Nose Victory in Amagansett Hurdle Beats Fulton at Aqueduct; 1 Favored Titien II. Squeezed Back, Carried Wide in Stake By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 28.— Qom-paratively cool weather and extremely torrid finishes were the order of the day at Aqueduct, with the widest margin enjoyed by any winner through the featured Amagansett Hurdle Handicap. Mrs. G. H. Bost-wicks Hyvania won that stake by a nose from Sanford Stud Farms Fulton, who led A. Edward Masters Titien H. by three and a half lengths. The latter was trying to carry the almost prohibitive topweight of 162 pounds, which didnt prevent him from also carrying the bulk of the money wagered by the crowd of 16,169. It appeared that Mrs. Ogden Phipps Look Around, who was coupled with the winner, did more to accomplish Titien n.s defeat than chase secretary Jack Cooper had done with his weight assignment, squeezing the favorite back, going into the backstretch the second time, then carrying him very wide at the head of the stretch. Jim Smiley rode Hyvania, who paid .70 and was timed in 3:09 for the about one I mile and three-quarters over a "good" ! track. Hyvania is a son of Hypnotist n., from the crack race filly, Vagrancy, and I is a half-brother to the St. Leger winner, Black Tarquin, bred by William Woodwards Belair Stud. A habit of racing with his head carried extremely high kept Hy- ■ vania from being a good horse on the flat and almost cost him todays race, as Fulton almost showed his nose even with the winner, though his shoulder was well back of Hyvanias. New Rule Leads for First Turn of Course Margaret Kirkpatricks New Rule went to the front as the field broke from the rubber tape in front of the stands and led for the first turn of the course, followed by Hyvania, Fulton, Swiggle, Look Around, Silver Bridge and Titien II, the field closely bunched. Smiley and Foot had Hyvania and Titien II under a strong hold for than a mile. • New Rule began to tire after a mile and Fulton took a slight lead, with Hyvania moving into second place a little farther on. Turning into the backstretch the second time, Foot tried to send Titien n. up between Look Around and Swiggle, but was promptly squeezed back to last place again. He then started another move on the outside, but Look Around moved at the same time. Hyvania moved up to challenge Fulton at the head of the stretch and the two horses fought it put all the way to the wire, while Titien n. made a strong bid at the final bend, but lost considerable ground when carried out by Look Around. Hyvania seemed a sure winner from the final fence to the wire, but Fulton refused to give up and when Jimmy Zimmerman let his head drop right at the wire, he only missed gaining a dead-heat by inches. Titien II. finished well under his package, he was conceding 25 pounds to the winner, while Look Around was a respectable fourth. Woodvale Farms Boot All scored the first decisive triumph of the afternoon Continued on Page Three I Hyvania Emerges With Nose Victory in Amagansett Hurdle Continued from Page One when she reached the end of the Pierette Purse, best of the flat races, two lengths before Cain Hoy Stables fast-finishing Shy Bim, who led George D. Wideners favored Amphora by another three parts of a length. Harborvale Stables Mobile Belle was a length and a half out of the money at the end of the six furlongs. Ovie Scur-lock rode Boot All, his first assignment on the Our Boots filly, who paid .60 and stepped the six furlongs in 1:12 over a fast, but dead, racing strip. Eraser, as usual, went to the front at the start of the Pierette, closely followed by Mobile Belle, Boot All and Bold Irish, while the favored Amphora was another length away, while Shy Bim was last of eight. Eraser faded, also as usual, after three furlongs, and Boot All took command, while Amphora began to move up on the outside and Shy Bim came into contention. Boot All began to draw away nearing the stretch turn, but Eraser and Mobile Belle held on fairly well to the eighth pole, where Shy Bim and Amphora surged up on the outside. While Ovie Scurlock kept i pumping on the winner as she added to I her margin, Shy Bim put Amphora away while racing on the extreme outside. Mobile Belle held on well after forcing the torrid early pace, with Eraser finishing fifth.
