V Matthews, Marciano Match Likely To Discuss Details In N.Y. Next Week Would Be Held on July 14 With Winner to Receive Title Shot in September By JACK CUDDY United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., March 23. All has been forgiven; so Harry Matthews and Rocky Marciano probably will be matched next week for a heavyweight challengers fight at the Polo Grounds July 14. Promoter Jim Norris announced today he would confer Monday or Tuesday in New York with Matthews manager, Jack Hurley. And chairman Robert K. Christen-berry of the New York Boxing Commission gave the proposed fight his hearty approval "I figure the fight should gross about 00,000, said Norris, who not so long ago was very angry at Matthews of Seattle and pilot Hurley for making the uproar that started several investigations into Norris International Boxing Club. Christenberry also was angry at Matthews and Hurley for their criticism of boxing in New York state, their loud campaign for a light heavyweight title shot, and then their refusal to accept the title fight with champion Joey Maxim when It finally was offered. Promoter Norris smiled sweetly today when he said, "I hope to match Matthews and Marciano so that the winner can challenge in September for the heavyweight title against the Jersey Joe Walcott-Ezzard Charles winner." Walcott and Charles fight at Philadelphia June 5. Christenberry Oozes Honey And chairman Christenberry oozed honey when he said, "Ive already told Norris I hope he can make the Matthews-Marciano match because the experts believe it would be a great fight. Moreover, it would end the rumors Matthews is unable to get a fight in New York state." Norris emphasized he was not certain the match could be made although theres better than "a fair chance" that it will be closed. He said he had talked to Marty Weill, manager of unbeaten Marciano, and that Weill no longer rejected the match, although his demands were way up." Marciano of Brockton, Mass., scored his 40th consecutive victory on May 12 by knocking out Bernie Reynolds in the third round at Providence, R. I. It was his 36th kayo. Previously this year Rocky had belted out Gino Bounvino 2 on April 31, and Lee Savold 6 on February 13. Marciano weighed 185 and pounds in his last bout with Reynolds. That would givej him but a slight margin over Matthews 183 y2, registered on May 19 when Seattle Harry won a 10-round decision over Rex Layne at Podtland, Ore. Previously this year, Matthews had knocked out Georgie Kaplan 1 on April 28, and Charlie Eagle 5 on April 14. The records indicate that 30-year-old Matthews, although nearly three years older than Marciano, has had had two fewer pro bouts than Marcianos 40. Marciano, because of his superior punch, probably will be favored if the match is made. The International club today matched middleweights Carl "Bobo" Olson of Hawaii and Jimmy Beau of Norwalk, Conn., for 10 rounds at Madison Square Garden, June 6, This bout replaces the previously scheduled 10-rounder between middleweights Ernie Durando and Norman Hayes. The fight was cancelled because of a recurrent j eye injury suffered by Durando.
