With the 44-day meeting just one week away, River Downs is ready for the gala curtain-raiser Memorial Day, when it is expected to play host to 20,000 fans and shatter all opening-day betting and attendance records. Racing director Henry Green and his staff are busy preparing, for the opener which has attracted widespread interest. The local track presented busy scenes this morning as many stables arrived from distant points. From Maryland came the R; J. Jimmy Hughes, young Kentucky trainer, arrived with eight head he will train for several Lexingtonians. Price Shulers Pine Tree Stable reached here today topped by New Boston, who will try for several of the handicaps, including the 1,000 Cincinnati Championship. Also in the string are Big Spook, Bills Diamond and Dr. O. Beckleys Pete Beiltro. Another shipment from Louisville included seven brought in by W. Ford and a quartet of D. Martine. Track superintendent Thurman Pang-burn has the track in first class condition and while the heavy rains worked havoc with the training, many horses were seen on the track this morning and galloped along at brisk paces. The track was termed slow for the morning breezes and barring more rain the strip should be in top condition by Saturday.
