Olympic Fund Raising Group Still Seeks About 50,000 Yankee Athletes and Other Personnel Slated to Leave For Helsinki Early in July By ED SA1NSBUBY United Press Sports Writer Money is rolling in to pay for American competition in the 1952 Olympics, treasurer Owen Van Camp said yesterday, but the TJ. S. Olympic committee still needs about 50,000. "Every day the financial situation changes," Van Camp said. Todays balance, he said, was about 43,000, while on April 30, the committee had 2,446.59. "Wed like to get as much as we can," Van Camp said, "because weve got to build up the funds for the United States Olympic Association. We can usetheir money now, when we need it, and pay it back, but if we ever hit a bad year, were going to have to rely on association funds." I The Olympic committee has the responsibility of raising funds for the expenses of American teams, while the association is the continuing organization which operates during the four-year interlude between games. , As of April 30, the association had a balance of 31,159.65. Can Borrow, Then Pay Back "We can borrow from this," Van Camp said, "and then pay it back. We did bor-. row from it for the wjnter games, 1,-465.21, and thats been paid back." Van Camp said all money remaining after payment of expenses by the committee j would go to the association. "If we should have the games in 1960 or 64 and its like it was in 1929,"vhe said, "then well have to pay all expenses out of association funds." The committee this year has not yet received any funds from its three major sources, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Amateur Athletic Union, or the final tryouts for the various Olympic teams. Four years ago the NCAA and AAU each contributed about 90,000. This year the committee has been guaranteed 0,000 from the final tryouts for the mens track and field. squad. Each team committee is expected to raise its own funds, but the Olympic committee has the power to use the surplus from one team to make up the deficit for another. Some 400 Americans, including athletes, coaches, trainers and administrative personnel, will go to the 1952 games at Helsinki All will travel by air, with departures scheduled July 7, 8 and 9. They will return August 5, 6 and 7, all but the track team direct from Helsinki. The track team will go to London and compete in the Empire Games scheduled August 6.
