Primer Primer Brings Brings Out Out Field Field of of Twenty; Twenty; Yankee Yankee Handicap Handicap Goes Goes to to Blue Blue Man Man Leads King Jolie j Over Two Lengths McCreary Hand-Rides Mount To Impressive Score Before 19,380 Patrons at Suffolk By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 17.— The White Oak Stables Blue Man continued his quest for top honors in the topsy-turvy three-year-old division by bounding home in front of the small field contested the seventeenth running of the 0,000 added Yankee Handicap at Suffolk Downs today before a crowd of 19,380. While Conn McCreary did not elect to resort to the whip he did give the bay son of Blue Swords the advantage of a vigorous hand ride to build up the margin of two and one-quarter lengths that he had in his favor in advance of Isidore Biebers King Jolie while completing the mile and a quarter in 2 : 02 Vs. A head away from the first two Eddie Sir-avos Royal Marvel hung on gamely to collect show money a neck in advance of the Cain Hoy Stables tiring Armageddon. Minus Show Pool of ,466 While Blue Man was a short-priced favorite, being responsible for a ,466 minus show pool, the race was actually more interesting to watch than the result would indicate. Both Armageddon and King Jolie didnt take anything for granted and went out and tried to make a race of it, the former setting the early pace from the first stride out of the gate until the turn for home. Sammy Boulmetis rode a heady race on King Jolie, popped him in between horses at the half-mile pole and made a contender out of him from that point until the winner made his move on the outside of the field in front of the stand. Into the stretch King Jolie saved considerable ground in skimming along the rail when Armageddon went wide, but it wasnt enough to make a winner of him before Blue Mans stretch charge today. McCreary rode a cool and confident race Continued on Page Thirty-Five Blue Man Adds Yankee Renewal to Successes McCreary Hand-Rides White Oak Colt to Score Over King Jolie Continued from Page One and bided his time with Blue Man. Going to the half mile pole he started to move around horses, collared Armageddon at the quarter pole, stood off King Jolies challenge, and went on to win impressively enough without it being necessary for Conn to reach for his whip. In victory, Blue Man earned 8,950 of the 7,300 gross and parlayed his earnings for the year over the 00,000 mark, making a total of 20,285. Miss Patti Page, radio and recording star, presented the trophy to Arthur W. Abbott, former University of Maine football and baseball star, following the race. And then president John C. Pappas, of the Eastern Racing Association gave Miss Page a check for ,000 as a donation to the Damon Runyon Memorial Fund for cancer research. Some idea of the pressure Blue Man put on Armageddon can be obtained from the fractional times for the race. While the Cain Hoy representative was not too hard pressed to go the first half in :47%, he had to turn his speed on to remain in front after the first six furlongs was reached in 1:11 and they reached the mile, where Blue Man took over, in 1:36 flat. Surprise of the race, of course, was Royal Marvels showing in hanging on stubbornly to get third money. The Royal Nap colt has won five out of six races here and only last Saturday turned in a very fast six furlongs in 1:10% to win the John Alden Handicap. ■ i I ■; J . I J.
