Illinois Notes FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, III.. June 17. The Verde Stock Farm of Phoenix, Ariz., arrived from Ak-Sar-Ben at Omaha. The contingent, 13 in number, is trained by G. M. "Kid" Roberts, former rodeo star. Jockey W. E. Carroll left for Arlington Park, where he will ride until the reopening of Fairmount Park on Friday, June 27. Jerry McHenry, St. Louis sportsman, spent an afternoon at the local course looking over the grandstand damage of the recent storm. McHenry also spent several hours renewing his friendship with Charley Swain, the ex-jockey, who is now employed by the Fairmount Park management. Swain sfarred in the saddle at this Midwest course a few years ago. Leo Jones, known to his many friends as * Lightning" is spending a brief vacation with his family in New Orleans. Jones is the son of the first "Lightning" Jones, a top-flight jockey some years ago. Claude Hooper, veteran reinsman. will ply his trade at Detroit during the shutdown period at Fairmount Park. Hooper will return for the reopening. Apprentice Robert Gaffglione checked in from Omaha, accompanied by his mother. The ponular youngster is under contract to the Creekside Farm. Johnnie Daniel, the announcer, who is also on the office staff, is staving on duty while racing secretary Jack Klucina and his assistant, Ray Hopton, are in Chicago in the quest of obtaining some of the better horses that will not race at Arlington Park. Mrs. Clair Simone purchased the six-year-old gelding Garrett C. from N. H. CooDer. Terms of the sale were private. M. C. Simone will train the newly-acquired racer. ] Ray Douglas, patrol judge and stall superintendent, remains on duty during the "shut down" period, since the influx of horses arriving and departing is of a heavy vein.
