Hazel Park Will Offer 0,000 Purse at Meet Top Prize in Final Endurance Handicap Series Run Each Week DETROIT, Mich., June 17.— Hazel Park Racing Association will offer a 0,000 purse as the top prize in the most ambitious Endurance Handicap series ever offered at the popular suburban Detroit track, racing secretary Horace Wade announced today, following a conference with Hazel Parks president, Richard A. Connell and vice-president Waldo Andrews. This is the largest purse to be announced to date for the 56-day race meeting which opens at Hazel Park Friday, August 1. Wade plans to open the No. 1 Endurance series on the first Saturday of the meeting with a mile and an eighth race *or horses of all ages. The purse will be ,500. Then, on each succeeding Saturday of the meeting the plan calls for a little more distance and a bigger purse — culminating with the two-mile finale and the 0,000 purse on closing day, October 4. The No. 2 Endurance series to be decided on successive Wednesdays at Hazel Park will be for horses which have started for a claiming price of ,500 or less during the current year. Races will start at a mile and a furlong and move up by degrees to a final mile and three-quarters event. Purses, under present plans, will run from ,500 to ,000 for these mid-week features. "This is in keeping with the Hazel Park policy to make purses commensurate with the class of horses entered, and the distance traveled," Wade said. Hazel Park established the Endurance series at its inaugural meeting in 1949, and track officials point out that each succeeding year the marathons gained in popularity with local racing patrons.
