Janina Must Give Our Request Weight Today in Detroits Schoolcraft Purse Fifteen-Pound Shift Should 1 Bring Rivals Close Together At End of One Mile Journey Br DON FAIR. Staff Correspondent . DETROIT, Mich., June 17.— The Schoolcraft Purse, one mUe condition race for four-year-olds and older, will occupy the spotlight tomorrow afternoon at this correctly-appointed Detroit race course, the feature on a splendid mid-week program. Eight of the best thoroughbreds quartered at the local oval are entered in the School-. craft, which shapes up as one of the more interesting events scheduled during the current Motor City season. Our Request, six -year-old homebred stakes-winning daughter of Requested and Inspiration, will carry the White and Thomas silks in the Schoolcraft and, although she disappointed in three previous Detroit outings, probably will answer "Boots and Saddles" Wednesday the choice over her seven rivals. Favorably-weigh ted at 110 pounds under the Schoolcraft Purse allowances, Our Request is to be ridden by hustling Lois Cook. i William Goelitz, California patron, will send out Janina, 116, for the Schoolcraft, T. A. Sears is to rely on the useful Witch Way, 115, and Theodore D. Buhl, of Detroit, will be represented by the speedy Second Avenue, 118 pounds. Others named for the principal attraction are A. F. Walls Golden Trend, 112; Tic-Toe Stables Bullet Cee, 110; and Marion H. VanBergs Nebraska-owned Miss Bobbin, 110 pounds. Janina, a six-year-old Jacopo-sired mare, whipped Our Request on June 11 in the eight furlongs Gratiot Purse and the pairs scheduled return engagement has created quite a stir here. Janina enjoyed a nine pounds pull in the weights over Our Request in the previous encounter but she will spot, the White and Thomas star six pounds in the Schoolcraft. William McKinley Cook, who successfully piloted Janina in the Gratiot, again will be at the reins on the Goelitz mare, thus the Kentucky-born Cook brothers may battle it out astride the top Schoolcraft Purse choices. There is no question as to Our Requests ability, despite the fact that she has been a bit slow coming to hand this season. Victress in the Louisville Handicap at Continued on Page Thirty -Nine Janina Concedes Our Request Weight in Schoolcraft Purse Continued from Page One Churchill Downs last fall in which event she beat Ruhe, War Talk and Bugledrums after stepping nine furlongs over a good-track in 1:51%, Our Request certainly boasts class enough to down her Schoolcraft competition. During her 1950 campaign, the White and Thomas speedster won the Falls City Handicap and placed in the Rose Leaves and Louisville. Her recent morning trials have been quite satisfactory to her trainer, the popular Tennessee turfman, George White. Perhaps one of the most improved horses to show here this season is Witch Way, victor in his last two Detroit engagements. The five-year-old Galway-sired gelding trimmed Alsiral, Pollys Delay, Happy Gander, Fine Art and others of that class in a three-quarter mile dash June 11 and, previous to that conquest, won over nine rivals at the mile and 70 yards distance. Witch Ways time in the latter outing was a creditable 1:42, just one-fifth second off the track record. Should the Sears represent- ative race to his best form tomorrow he will take some beating in the Schoolcraft. Second Avenue and Miss Bobbin met at the local strip on May 30 in the six furlongs Huron Purse and the Buhl stallion defeated the VanBerg mare by a short margin in 1:11%. The two are to clash again tomorrow in the Schoolcraft along with Dooly, who has shown some improvement; Bullet Cee, pitched a bit high in recent outings, and Golden Trend, slated to make her 1952 racing debut. Eight three-year-olds are to tangle in the three-quarters mile fifth race, which will serve as the chief supporting attraction. Included in the list of overnight entrants for the sprint are such speedy performers as H. W. Kellehers Chalpur, a victor at the meet; and White and LeBus Speed o Light, recent visitor to the local winners ring. Others entered in the secondary offering- are J. Smith and the estate of B. W. Stivers Shelby Lane, R. C. Groffs Rod Wood, Jerry McCarthy Stables Chevron Ace, Robert Youngs quick Shibboleth, Ad-ler and Zakoors Condilida, and R. A. Para-cheks Thistle War. Condilida and Chevron Ace are coupled for the dash and they will be saddled by trainer William Zakoor.
