Fred R. had no trouble in outrunning his opposition away from the gate, or for that matter for the rest of the Grubbs Purse. Rail Creek maintained the runner-up spot for the most part of the race, while Chello and Warpath formed a tandem of blue silks battling for fourth place down the backstretch. Fred R. was constantly far in front of his rivals and was never seriously threatened at any stages of the event. The field was strung out as soon as they left the first turn and the only shift in positions came at the stretch turn. Chello slipped through on the rail rounding the bend and passed Rail Creek, but never at any time cut into the leaders margin, Hanford reached back with his whip at the eighth pole but decided not to use it when a quick look showed him all was se-lcure.
