Chicago Downs Offering Minimum Purses of 00 Highest Ever Scheduled in Area; Juveniles Go in Betless Event SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111.. June 1 23. — Minimum purses at the Chicago j Downs harness race meeting have been set at the highest peak ever in the Chicago area for the 42 -night meeting under way at Sportsmans Park. President Don Burnett announced that a minimum of 00 will be paid with most of the races going for purses over ,000. By comparison, last season, the minimum was between 00 and 00 at all Chicago area tracks and several races were staged for the legal minimum of 00. "We are offering purses of a minimum exactly double that set by law," Burnett I explained. "It merely follows our policy of giving the horsemen, who make racing possible, their fair share of the proceeds." Besides the nine-race card, a tenth event will be staged with no betting at Sportsmans Park Tuesday night for two-year-old colts. A purse of ,000 will be offered for the seven-horse field of classy youngsters. Burnett explained that the race will have no betting because the main purpose of such races is to acquaint the public with new flesh. Steve Tell, driven by Whitey Ainsworth, is considered the standout in the two-year-old stake. He won his only start at May-I wood Park. Artie Cash, driven by Bill Long,! 1 is expected to cause the most trouble. Two other stakes events will be staged on the regular program. The 21 class pacing event for ,200 has drawn. No fewer than 28 horses declared for the event and it was split into three divisions. Bobby King, driven by Red Scott, is the favorite in the first division fourth race. Bannock Bay and Chief Wingay are expected to fight it out for the lions share in the fifth race. The eighth race finds Annville and Even Direct topping the morning line. The 17 class Trot stake for ,875 drew 10 entrants with Delhi Lady, driven by veteran Dee Stover; and Spud Hart, who won Friday night at "Maywood heading the field.
