. Fracas Tops Nine In Spring Maiden Delaware Parks Version of Steeplechase Series Draws Montadet,Beaupre,Mahatma DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 23. — The ,000 added Delaware Spring Maiden Steeplechase, one in a series of three such events run annually at Belmont, Delaware and Aqueduct, features tomorrows -program at Delaware Park. Nine infield performers have been named for the 15-jump, about two miles test, the conditions of which limit the starters to maidens at the time of the March 10 closing date. Highweight starter in the Spring Maiden is Evander B. Schleys Fracas, under 166 pounds. This burden was earned largely through his victory in the Belmont running of the event, in which he beat Golden Furlong and Hunting Fox, among others. He will be ridden by Albert Foot and will have a running companion in John M. Schiffs Montadet. The latter was second to Fracas during the current meeting and is eligible to improve with a race over the course. He will have the services of Robert S. McDonald. Named to oppose trainer Oleg T. Dubas-soffs tandem are the following: Manton B. Metcalf, Jr.s Beaupre, Courtney Burtons Hunting Fox, Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Master Mariner, F. Ambrose Clarks team of The Creek and Gerrymander, Mrs. Arthur Whites Mahatma, and C. Mahlon Klines Spleen. Hunting Fox was third to Fracas at Belmont and in local competition was beaten slightly more than a length by His Boots. The winners time of 3:51% was not sensational, but satisfactory for jumpers of his caliber. Escapes Stable Fire Beaupre is somewhat of an unknown quality. He has raced but once this season and beat two horses in a race during the Camden, South Carolina, hunt meeting. He is, however, in good hands and will be ridden by Ray Woolfe, Jr. He is, incidentally, one of two horses in the Woolfe menage to escape the Belmont Park stable fire, all others in charge of the conditioner having been destroyed. The other survivor was Hampton Roads, both having been shipped to this point shortly before the disaster. Gerrymander and The Creek will attract some support, with the former a definite threat. He was a top-notch hurdle horse in 1950, but was idle the following year. This season he has won a pair of turf races at the hunt meeting. He was also third behind Hot and Flaming Comet in a Belmont steeplechase event, then was a trailer when apparently overmatched in the Temple Gwathmey, won by The Mast. The Creek also was a double winner in hunts competition. Mahatma, a Mahmoud gelding, made his first start of the year here last week and bolted off the course while racing prominently. If able to perform a bit more kindly, he could spring an upset. Spleen was beaten off in a race here by Fracas, while Master Mariners last was in a Belmont hurdle event. The third race on tomorrows program, an allowance affair for two-year-olds, has attracted a respectable field. Entered to compete are Judge M., Last Word, Prince Dare, Pomposity, Supremes Bub and the Hanger-Mill River coupling of Rica Rosie and Malahide. J*
