True, she will have 121 pounds up against older opposition. So what? She will also have Eddie Arcaro. And she carried 121 in her last triumph, which was in the Cleopatra Stakes opening day. Her predecessors in carrying the devil red silks of Calumet home in front in the Artful were Two Lea in 1949, and Bewitch in 1948. During the last two years the Artful, previously known as the Artful Stakes, has been relegated to the limbo of forgotten things. In prior years it was run at Washington Park and was for three -year -olds. This time it is for three-year-olds and up. Calumet started off to make the race its very own in the first running in 1945 when Good Blood and Twosy were first and second, respectively. Doug Dodson, who is here, rode the winner, and Steve Brooks, who is also on the job, won the last Artful. Both Bewitch and Two Lea carried more poundage than that to be toted by Real Delight . . . Gracious Mrs. Warren Wright did not appear in the winners circle Saturday after Bubbley had won the Pollyan-na. Trainer Ben Jones held the horse on the track for a few minutes and scanned the crowd looking for Mrs. Wright, but the lady wished to do the honors in the following event, the Warren Wright Memorial, Bubbley was required to forego that kindly pat on the nose from his mistress. Bubbley, who ran a smashing race, is a full sister of ReaL Delight. Many were of the opinion that Red Charger, the Warren Wright Memorial winner, tried to savage Hannibal during the stretch run. It may be recalled that Oh Leo attempted a like job on Hill Gail in the Arlington Futurity last year. It might be possible to bring the three -year-olds together for a biting contest. We recently read of an old-time breeder whose pleasure, aside from horses, was raising fighting: cocks. He had several good stallions and friends say his stallions were always fighting, while his chickens were always running away. If his chickens had fought and his horses ran, he might still be in business . . . Jane Gail, dam of Hill Gail, died at Calumet Farm last month. She had a baby brother of the Kentucky Derby winner at her side and was in foal to Bull Lea. Oscar Breault, who has the stallions Challenge Me and With Pleasure standing on his place at Paris, Ky., reports mares in fdal to Challenge Me and 42 foal to With Pleasure. . .Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Emick were in from Kansas City over the week-end . . . John A. Kinard, who recently disposed of his sole racer, Cajac, has left for his home in Breckeys, Ark . . Dave Feldman had tough rack over the week-end. Thieves stole all four tires from his car and broke into the rear end to take the fifth, while the three -year -old Dance Nsing in which he has an interest, injured himself in his stall early Saturday afternoon and had to be withdrawn from the Warren Wright Memorial . . . W. J. Schmidt, who has a number of horses in training here, is a former polo star. So is Aidan Roark, one of the stewards. Roark is the husband of Helen Wills, who was the Maureen Connolly of her day and was known as "Little Miss Poker Face" of the tennis courts. . Protests from some Kentuckians that Eddie Arcaro was born in Newport, Ky. That town is just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. The Arlington management is inaugurating a new policy to provide evening s entertainment for horsemen and employes. Every Tuesday and Friday evening a feature motion picture, together with ?j short subjects will be shown on a screen under the grandstand. All connected with h racing in any phase are invited.
