Olympia Purse Lures Sextet to Post ♦ Steak Bone Likely Arlington Choice Joe Graves, Elaine Ruth and Hi Decker Threats; Run First Combination Race of Meet By J. J. MURPHY ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 23.— Although the outlook for fast track racing tomorrow was none too bright, the program for that day with a couple of exceptions, has drawn large fields. The featured Olympia Purse is "light," having but six entrants but, at the weights, they seem to be evenly matched and a good contest is likely to result. Top impost of 118 will be carried by John McShanes Steak Bone, a son of Bull Dog, while others are Dry Run and Joe Graves, each with 113; Pilchuck, with 108; Elaine Ruth, with 107,* and Hi Decker, with 102. Steak Bone will be making his first appearance of the season at this course and his second start of the year. In his initial outing at the Lincoln Fields session he showed a good measure of speed, weakening only in the closing stages to be beaten by Bloody Step, Roman Bath and Recline. He won five purses in 11 attempts last year and will be ridden by Don Scurlock. Dry Run, owned by P. J. McMullen, has started 13 times this season and won four races. In his prior effort at the Lincoln session he was second to Sun David on a slippy track and trimmed the handicap runner, Royal Mustang, as well as the hard-hitting Cacomo. Apprentice John Heckmann will have the mount on the son of Sky Raider. Ran Second in St. Charles Purse Joe Graves had his first trial in competition here last Tuesday when he was second to Sabaean in the St. Charles Purse at the six-furlong distance. That was his first attempt after having finished eighth in the Edward J. Fleming Memorial Handicap. Elaine Ruth, only filly in the field, was victorious in the Geneva Purse last week while racing with three-year-olds on a good track. Pilchuck, owned by Clifford Mooers, will be going postward for the first time since Keeneland, where he was third to Duke Boswell. Hi Decker won her last race at Lincoln Fields meeting, beating Pines of Rome and others in the Belle of America Purse. The secondary feature brings together a good field of older horses, including Emerald Hill Stables Strike Out, Joe Hard-wicks Country Boy II. and W. J. Schmidts Whirl Home. Strike Out is coupled as an entry with Flying Bold, also from the Emerald Hill Stable. B. W. Landy has an entry of Worcester and Tuxedo. Argonne Stable dropped in King Diver and R. E. _ Mansfield named Chow Chow. De Liso, owned by J. A. Mayham, complete the field. The band will compete over a mile and three -sixteenths on the turf for a ,000 purse. And it will mark the first time that a combination race, so popular in California, has been tried in this area. In such an event a horse may or may not be en- _ tered to be claimed. Only runner with a price tag in this is Worcester, a three -time IB winner at Lincoln-at-Hawthorne. of of »
