, •mamm BETWEEN RACES Byoov, 5 HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif.,. June 23.— Brookfield Farms Intent se-». lected the Lakes and Flowers Handicap at fc , seven seven furlongs furlongs on on Sat- seven seven furlongs furlongs on on Sat- Saturday to launch his s summer campaign in the West, and while s most everybody would have settled for "just t a creditable race," the i son of War Relic left t them breathless by not t only winning the stake under top weight of f 124 pounds, but came within a fifth of a second - 0 Qff off aj the .j track rec- rec_ * •mamm 0 Qff off aj the .j track rec- rec_ * ord in beating the speedy Admiral Drake i and the lightly rigged Last Round. Intents - old rival of Santa Anita racing, , Miche, failed to rally in the race and was 5 not a factor. But any question as to Intents being rightly entitled to pre-race : favoritism in the 00,000 net guaranteed i to winner Gold Cup were removed by his 5 smashing score. Intent not only had more i early speed than usual, he was fairly close i up in the early part, but he also showed 1 extreme gameness against Admiral Drake, , a horse who, while he might not be the ? best sprinter in the West, is not far away T from it, and who most certainly is at the peak of good form. The Lakes and Flowers added but 3,250 to Intents bankroll for r this year, but it lifted it to the tidy total 1 of 17,100, and he still has the big money 7 coming up this summer. As was noted last t winter, he Was disqualified from slightly 7 better than 0,000 in first money in the Santa Anita Handicap, that 0,000 representing - the difference between first and I second money. While our original estimate * that Intent could wind up the Hollywood * meeting with some 00,000 in earnings on 1 the West Coast may be a trifle high, our prediction missed, it seems, mainly because e the colt came down with a cough which I cost him a starting berth in a 0,000 race e and perhaps one or two others of lesser r value. AAA We watched Intent particularly to see if f he had any tendency to run out, bear in, t, or lug, and happily, trainer W. J. "Buddy" " Hirsch seems to have him cured of this s tendency. His race was true enough in the e Lakes and Flowers to satisfy even the most meticulous steward. Intent was ridden by y Euclid LeBlanc, a newcomer to coast racing - but who is doing all right. And we still II think that while Intent is perhaps 10 0 pounds away from Spartan Valor as a a handicap horse, if the Lakes and Flowers s be taken as- a criterion of a first outing, „ fc s s t i t t f - * i - , 5 : i 5 i i 1 , ? AAA If there were any doubts, too, as to the inherent class of A Gleam, they were re- moved in the Cinema at a mile and one- sixteenth when the Calumet filly picked up 124 pounds of top weight and humbled the best colts that could be mustered against her. A Gleam had trouble in the Cinema, being in close quarters for a considerable portion of the stake, but when she got clear, she came with a rush that was at once dramatic and irressistable. If Intent is the advance favorite for the Gold Cup, then, too, indisputably A Gleam is the early choice for the Westerner, Hollywood Parks version of the Derby. There is no question but that she will go a full mile and a quarter, inasmuch as she has the ability to use her speed at any time re-5 quested, and also to conserve it when con-s ditions warrant. A Gleams time was a smart 1:42%, with the first mile in 1:36 V5. She earned 7,500 in the Cinema to lift her earnings for the year to 3,150, and set some sort of a mark for consistency, for, in her 11 starts this season, all in Cali-e fornia, she has been worse than second only once. AAA Joe Gottstein phones from Seattle to re- port that Longacres enjoyed a brilliant opener, up 15 per cent from last year de-r spite "worser" comparative weather and attributes much of the invigorated interest in the sport in the Northwest in the new "name horses" and riders on the grounds, newcomers who are there primarily in response to the "better purses for better horses" program. "The new faces seemed to have helped a lot," says Gottstein, president of the natty Longacres plant in the heart of the evergreen playground. "For instance, our inaugural stake was won by End to End, a hard-hitter from Cali-t fornia, who beat the former Calumet horse, Coiner. Of the eight entered in the In- augural, and the seven who started, only two had raced in the Northwest before. Northwest fans were extremely intrigued by the arrival of Fanfare, second in the Derby Trial for Calumet, and fifth in the Kentucky Derby. These new horses have ►added intersectional interest to a considerable degree, and are proving worthy mettle S to test our rapidly improving homebred d stock." For instance, Sir Calbenor finished d third in the Inaugural, and hes a horse e who has caught the popular fancy at Long-acres - if only for the reason that he was s s raised within the city limits of Seattle on 2 a one acre plot in the southwest part of town, and, while growing, became a famous 3 neighborhood pet. End to End, the winner, races for a Seattle restaurant owner, Dino 0 Lazzi, and is trained by ex-chef Earl Barbour. " The latter, it seems, had gained a a deal of fame as an artisan with food and * sauces when his doctor told him that he e would have to leave the range forever and i seek outdoor employment if he wanted to 0 live. Barbour selected the race track as being " the best choice possible, applied himself f 1 as a horseman and, within the last 10 years, has become a leading trainer and breeder. "• In fact, as able a horseman as Allan Drum-heller " turns over to Barbour the horses s he wishes to race in the Northwest. The former chef is now as healthy as the proverbial " horse. AAA Gottstein also tells us that aside from Q the actual percentage "uppage" in the e handle, the most gratifying development is the attitude of the townspeople that Long-acres " is doing something to upgrade the e racing and have a lot more interest in the e sport now that they are convinced that .t better than platers are providing the thoroughbred - programs. Actually, for a comparatively - small track, Longacres has perhaps •- the best balanced stakes and overnight - handicap program in the nation i. , Saturday stakes have been carded in addition - to the usual Sunday headliners, and in n addition the experiment of offering stakes is on certain Wednesdays is being tried. Our ir British Columbia observer also reports that it Lansdowne had a strong opening despite e adverse weather and the cussedness of the e bridge leading from downtown Vancouver t to Lulu Island, on which Lansdowne is is located. Seems that whenever a steamer ;r wants to get by. it toots and the bridge e opens, thereby piling up traffic. The whole le city of Vancouver has been talking about it a new bridge to the island for years, but so far, it has not materialized. When it does, 3, we dare say that Lansdowne, operated by y British Columbia Turf and Country Club, 3, will jump in both attendance and play at least 50 per cent. Incidentally, per capita a wise, both Seattle and Vancouver are two of the "best" racing communities in the e nation. By "best" we mean in all-over T interest. *
