Filly Stakes at Illinois Fairs Total Some 0,000 Four Divisions of Each Will Be Raced at Springfield, Du Quoin COLUMBUS, Ohio.— Two and three-year-old harness racing fillies will compete for purses worth almost 0,000 in Grand Circuit stakes designed exclusively for the fillies and slated to be contested at two Illinois fairs this year. Four divisions of each stake will be raced at both the Illinois State Fair. Springfield and the Du Quoin State Fair, Du Quoin. j The Springfield jackpot is expected to hit 8,880 while 9,220 will be distributed at Du Quoin. i The new races, identified as the Breeders Filly Stakes, were inaugurated this year in order to provide better opportunities for fillies. In addition to Springfield and Du Quoin, divisions of the stakes will be raced at Goshen, N. Y.; Sedalia, Mo.: Indianapolis, Ind. and Delaware, Ohio. The Grand Circuit series will gross close to 00,000. Four separate races will be staged at each of the Illinois fairs, one apiece for two and three-year-old trotters and pacers. The filly stakes are part of the regular racing * program which is set for the week of Aug. 10-16 at Springfield and Aug. 24-30 at Du Quoin. The two-year-old entrants all are newcomers to the racing scene but many of the three-year-old fillies nominated are proven veterans of the trotting and pacing wars. Last years season champions at both gaits, the trotter Kimberly Mine and the pacer Silent Waters, both are entered at both fairs. In addition, the good Illinois trotters Mudlark, owned by Dr. Hugh Cooper, Peoria; and Derna, property of Col. E. J. Baker, St. Charles, are slated to take the word in the three-year-old trot. Matching strides with Silent Waters in the three -year-old pace will be such stars as Meadios, undefeated in 1951, True Karen. My Time and Prim Hal. The filly stakes at Springfield will be sponsored by The Castleton Farm of Lexington, Ky. Two other Lexington nursies, Gainesway Farm and Popular Hill Farm, will sponsor the Du Quoin races.
