Bessies Beau Takes Attention Purse . Comes From Behind Under Jimmy Stout Gets Up at Monmouth Park On Sloppy Track and Holds Half-Length on Wise Idea By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 23. — Jockey Jimmy Stout, smartly rating Bessies Beau far back of the hard-pushed leaders, came rolling from next to last in the field of seven in the stretch run and got the filly up to capture todays featured Attention Purse by three-quarters of a length. The Mrs. H. Gilmore Young-owned sophomore daughter of Ja-copo — Bess B. put away W. M. Wickhams Wise Idea in the concluding strides of the mile and a sixteenth event, with C. V. Whitneys Turks Cap holding on after a prolonged drive to be another half-length behind and third. Bessies Beau was made a slight favorite, due to the presence of Stout in the saddle and known ability of Bessies Beau to handle a sloppy course. The strip today was an oval field of water, replenished through intermittent rains throughout the afternoon. This was the third victory of the season for Bessies Beau, all scored over watery tracks, and she paid .60. The time was a creditable 1:48 Vs. The officers of the Monmouth Park Jockey Club must have been well pleased as the turnstiles registered 11,040, which maintained the steady gains that have been shown over last year, despite the fact that the cold and rain made this the nastiest afternoon of the meeting. Stouts Second Score of Day It was the second score of the day for "Gentleman Jimmy" Stout, he having earlier brought home G. H. Bostwicks La Fortuna in the fourth race for a 0.40 mutuel. S. P. Stecklers Decapolis cut out - the pace, with Myers and Lewis Jack Jr. providing his closest contention. Wise Idea was not far behind, followed by Turks Cap, Our Cookie, racing for the Treplow Stable, Bessies Beau and Mrs. A. Roberts Little Greg. The latter, who was the overnight favorite, did not like the going and always was out of it. j A spirited battle developed between Decapolis, Jack Jr., Wise Idea and Turks Cap rounding into the stretch, with the early leaders wilting in the last furlong s and leaving it for the other two to fight - it out, although Bessies Beau was now t coming fast. Turks Cap was used up after ti a long siege of urging and gave way in the s last 20 yards, with Wise Idea also falling back when confronted with the energy of I the winner. H C. V. Whitneys Flamenco, a hopeful for the Colleen Stakes on July 4, made an impressive local debut in winning the third ~ race with a three-quarters of a length ad-5 vantage over J. M. Roeblings Course North, ? who is also eligible for the filly stake. Sam Boulmetis rode the red roan daughter of " Mahmoud and Bright Song, by Carrier Pigeon, who stepped the five furlongs in a I quick 1:00%. She was coupled as an entry a with the first-time starting White Witch, B who did not like the watery going, and paid 1.00. A consolation Daily Double was returned to o following the late withdrawal of M. Mac a a Schwebels Little Herman in the second y race. The two-year-old colt, who has never Q started, was fractious and reared over back-t ward in the gate. The consolation pay-off s with Harold Wests Timein, favored victor y in the opener paid 3.00. d The regular Daily Double pay-off came d to a juicy 65.00, when Almar Stables t- Domage romped to a five lengths score in y 1:00*4 under the reining of Jimmy Breck-d ons.
