MURPHY Staff Correspondent SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 13. — A total of 8,425 hardy souls braved the near wintry weather that prevailed here today to make the trip to the track. The thermometer had dropped about 35 degrees from yesterday and heavy clothing was the order of the day. The featured race was a five furlong affair known as the Singapore Purse and owner Marion VanBerg took both first and second monies with Fine Fiddle, being the winner, and Jackie Van finishing second. The pair were favored and Fine Fiddle equaled the five furlong track record of :59% established by Mary H. last season. Grass Fire finished third. Jackie Van, quick to begin, set the pace in the Singapore with Fine Fiddle in closest ; attendance and it was not until rounding the stretch turn that the latter got to the front. Then the daugher of First Fiddle, making her third start of the session, drew away to score by two lengths and running easily. The VanBerg pair paid .60. A field of eight competed. Manifold Astride Two Winners Thirty-seven-year-old jockey Hank Manifold was in good form today when he won ; two of the first five races. He came back in the fifth to have Columbus Bound in front all the way. The Daily Double pay-off of 13.40 from Martin Whelan to Steamboat Bill, the second race winner, was the largest of the meeting. Steamboat Bill, making his fourth start here, came from several lengths out of it to get the money over Royal Luck and the favored Phantom Heels. Joe Valenti, who will lose his apprentice allowance with another winning mount, was the successful rider. Night Fighter, a short-priced favorite, ridden by Harold Keene, took the fourth race by six lengths in the colors of William Hal Bishop, while Papa Bear, an outsider, steered by Louis Pafundi, led most of the way in the third. The four-year-old John Alden ran one of the fastest seven furlongs of the meeting when he traveled the distance in 1 :26"S in thes ixth race. The gelding representing Mrs. Nellie Mikel, and ridden by Willie Cox, was in front all the way. Double Barrel was second and Lovely Devil third, with Sailors Delite and Ida C. the favorites, being unplaced.
