Radical Surprises in Pimlico Sprint My Nell Only Neck* I Off Lead at Wire Avocado Falls Heavily With Jockey M. Caff are I la Aboard Near Five-Furlong Marker By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 13.— Mrs. Charles O. Schweitzers Radical, an absentee from the winners circle since the * Pimlico meeting last spring, upset the tal- * ent in the featured Armed Services Purse J this afternoon with a smashing victory as a ■ 4.20 chance. Mrs. Frederick J. Vollmers * My Nell failed by a neck and was two and r one-half lengths clear of George A. Sacks ° Rare Knave. c The only other horses to finish were Mrs. ■ is Chester A. Lyons Penocc and Mrs. Samuel * M. Pistorios Singing Beauty, the latter a c dull-running public choice. The other start- er, Harvey W. Shaffers Avacado, fell heavi- * ly with jockey Mike Caffarella while being c taken out of close quarters in vicinity of I the five-eighths pole. Caffarella was for- * tunate to escape injury in the mishap. Ra- £ dical, under Bobby Mitchell, was timed in J 1:11% for the six furlongs and his backers * in the shirt-sleeved crowd of 11,652 were * well scattered. * Penocc and Singing Beauty participated i in a speed duel along the backstretch, with * the latter first to give way as Penocc drew £ clear after three furlongs. It seems likely, * however, that the early efforts brought about the defeat of both sprinters. Penocc Shortens Stride With an advantage of a length and a half 1 nearing the stretch, Penocc shortened stride and was displaced by Radical when I straightened for the run to the wire. Ra- dical, a Maryland -bred son of Challenger , H. — Equipet, stuck to his task in work- I manlike fashion and it was good that he did, for William Hartack had My Nell run- 1 ning smoothly along the outside. Her final 1 effort was impressive, but fell short of victory by a neck. Rare Knave lacked a late "punch," but he was able to wear down the weary Penocc who finished fourth to duplicate his recent seasonal debut. iSnging Beauty faded bad-, ly and was some four and a half lengths behind the winner at the finish. Deverne Emerys Carrier Girl, who hasnt been worse than second during her career, was a driving winner of the five-furlong fifth race, involving eight non-winners of two races. Ridden by William Hartack, the Carrier Pigeon filly moved from off the pace to win in 1:00% as a 0.60 chance. Duntreath Farms Militant Miss and Manunda Stables Silver Arrow were one length behind the winner and noses apart at the wire. Seven well-matched three-year-olds met at six furlongs in the sixth race and a keenly contested sprint developed, with Mrs. Henry Obres Roman Orgy victorious by a neck under the veteran Jimmy Lynch. Second position was filled by Herb Boorses Uncle Ev, who lasted by one length over Roy McClarins Spring Grove. Roman Orgy, a Roman — Damaged Goods colt, was scor- ing his third win in four starts this year | and paid 6.40 after covering the distance in 1:12%. Tommy Barrow, who is seeing action in * Maryland for the first time during the cur- ! rent meeting, registered a saddle double 1 early in the program. Barrow opened the program with a 7.80 longshot, Don Yates If Money, then came back in the third race with Duntreath Farms highly-favored ! Red Cardinal, who paid .40.
