t SuffolkDowns Notebook ; By FRED G ALIAN1 NASRC Convenes in Boston June 7 Thomas Beedem Busy Laying Plans 1 Delegates Will Have Full Schedule I SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., , May 13. — The week of June 7 to 11 will mark the annual convention of the Na- , tional Association of State Racing Commissioners, with the city of ! Boston holding forth 1 as host. The convention direction is in the J hands of Thomas Beedem . of the Massachusetts ■ Racing Commission, who has been laying plans for the conclave for a year • now. When asked if he . were going to be glad [ , . | when all the work was completed and the : conclave over, Beedem replied that he i would be sorry; that he enjoyed mapping out and arranging for a full schedule of entertainment to supplement the business meetings. With a chairman like that at the helm the convention figures to be an odds-on success. Massachusetts is the host state for the convention, but since New England is a fairly close-knit racing circle, it actually can be called a New England convention. Since neither Rhode Island nor New Hampshire could suitably hold a convention, they have been invited to share in the making of this one a success. The Rhode Island commission and tracks will entertain the delegates, their wives and guests on Sunday, according to present plans, with a boat trip on Narragansett Bay and a shore dinner. The business sessions will open Monday with morning and afternoon sessions. The American Totalisator Company will be host at a dinner Monday night. Tuesday mornings business meeting will be followed with a luncheon and a day at the races at Suffolk Downs and a dinner that evening at the Bradford Hotel, with Triangle Publications, Inc., as host. Wednesday is the big day in Massachusetts with the running of the famed handicap and the delegates will attend the races after their usual morning session. The evening of the Massachusetts Handicap will be the date of the annual banquet with the NASRC members the guests of the Massachusetts commission, Suffolk Downs and the three dog tracks in the state. The business end of the convention will be completed with Thursday mornings | session, following which the New Hampshire commission and Rockingham Park will be host at luncheon and dinner at ; Wentworth-by-the-Sea. Beedem expects about 250 to attend the out of state dinners. Right now he is fairly certain of getting Les Paul and Mary Ford to entertain at the Wednesday night banquet, which is to be a summer formal affair, and he is lining up other talent for the evening. This dinner, he figures, will be the biggest, with about 500 attending. Boston was the host city to the NASRC back in 1938 but at that time a convention manager was hired to guide the affairs. Its a sure bet Beedem will have outdone him. The social whirl of New England doesnt end with the NASRC convention though. ! At a meeting of the New England turf writers last evening, it was decided to i hold their annual dinner dance at the Suffolk Downs Paddock Club on Saturday evening, June* 20, the semi-final Saturday of the meeting. The boys have five weeks I to whip the dinner into shape and the most popular announcement is that tickets will still sell for 0. The current slate of officers — Gerry Sullivan, of the Boston Traveler; Avery Brown, of the Morning Telegraph, and John Aborn, of the Providence Journal, were re-elected to office at the [ meeting without opposition. Valet Jim Brooks has been taken off the danger list following an operation for the removal of glass slivers in his eye.
