Apennine in Neck Ascot Park Tally Alternates With Ivy Boy in Setting Pace and Outgames Opponent in Thrilling Finish By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 13. — Robert C. Howards Apennine with jockey Johnny P. Phillips in the saddle took a thrilling neck decision in one of the better offerings here this afternoon. Ivy Boy, the favorite, was second two lengths in front of Fengtien. The winner paid .60 and toured the six and a half furlongs in 1:23% over a track that was classified as sloppy. There was quite an amount of water through the front stretch, however, the backside appeared to be in pretty good shape. It was a rather bleak afternoon for the sport with temperatures in the low fifties. A crowd of 4,300 turned out. Apennine, broke third in this event, saved ground on the clubhouse turn gaining a short head lead over Ivy Boy as the horses raced into the backstretch. Midway down the backstretch the favorite moved up to gain a length advantage and when clear moved to the inner rail to save ground on the curves. Ivy Boy Still in Front At the head of the stretch Ivy Boy was still hanging on gamely by a half length with the ultimate winner in closest pursuit on his outside. Seventy yards out Apennine surged to the front and under brisk handling held Ivy Boy off in the remaining distance to the wire. In winning the gelded son of Revoked who was bred by Phil Godfrey now becomes a triple winner during the season and a double winner at Ascot. In his other winning race here he was forced to share the honors with Hundred Proof for a head heat resulted. C. M. Harpers Cheriful moved around Vetch, the favorite, at the head of the stretch and then went on about her business earning a three and a half lengths decision in the fifth race with jockey C. Harper in the saddle. The daughter of Sig-nator returned 6.60 and was timed in :55% for the dash. Cheriful broke sixth but soon thereafter moving up between horses was third three lengths off the pace being set by the favorite. Rounding the far turn Cheriful started to move up gamely and at the head of the stretch drew on even terms with Vetch, who had drifted out a trifle at the head of the lane. Cheriful was making her third start of the season and was winning her first race. Last season she compiled a record of two victories in 11 starts.
