Shy Shy Guy Guy in in Popular Popular Score Score at at Downs; Downs; Juvenile Juvenile Stakes Stakes to to Catspaw Catspaw by by Nose Nose Raintree Second To Dixiana Veteran Son of Challedon Responds to Heckmanns Smart Handling To Take Ohio Valley Purse By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky., May 13. — Shy Guy, a handsome but aged gelded son of Challedon and Tootsiecake, proved that he still has that touch of class when he carried Charles T. Fishers Dixiana silks to a popular victory here today in the Ohio Valley Purse. The Dixiana homebred now eight years old, responded to a well-judged ride from Johnny Heck-mann, streaking to the end of the six furlongs feature a length and one-half before Jake Lowensteins Raintree, who was second by a half length over Hasty House Farm and Mrs. Harry Trotseks fast-finishing Big Stretch. Eight seasoned sprinters started in the headline attraction and Denis J. Gleesons Chombro, who gave a good effort salvaged fourth money. Shy Guy, who was making his first start since suffering defeat in the New Orleans Handicap, shouldered 110 pounds under the Ohio Valley allowances and whirled the three-quarters mile over the sloppy track in an impressive 1:12. The Dixiana onetime stakes star was a lukewarm 16 to 5 favorite with the surprisingly active crowd of 7,000 spectators on hand this cloudy afternoon. Boots Image Sets Pace Boots Image, from the locally-owned Irvine Kort Stable, took command at the start of the Ohio Valley and he set the pace to the stretch with Raintree in closest attendance. Shy Guy was no better than fifth passing the initial quarter-mile marker, while Big Stretch was last but saving ground under a steady ride from Red Howell. Turning into the home lane Boots Image chucked it and Raintree immediately took over as Shy Guy, who had raced next to the inner rail from the start, began his victorious bid. Chombro was a well-placed third when settled for the final drive, while Big Stretch came from last and in the middle of the track. Shy Guy responded readily to Heckmanns vigorous handling and, racing Raintree into defeat, won going away while the latter was under strong pressure during the last sixteenth mile to save the place from Big | Stretch, who closed with a brilliant burst 1 of speed. Chombro was a faltering fourth 1 at the wire and Boots Image, all out after 1 his display of early foot, finished last. Arcaro really got into the Mahmoud colt in the final yards and Catspaw reached out for ground with great, lunging strides, but Permain fought on with unsuspected courage, only succumbing inthe shadow of the wire. Swift Sword finished well, while Full Flight also closed ground belatedly. There was a strong play for G. D. Wideners first-time starter, Kabyle, but the gray colt lost his action completely after a sixteenth and finnished 11th, with Quick Lunch in 10th place after showing a little speed for a half mile. Ashenden, who was also well-supported, showed nothing, while Mr. Looknow stopped badly in the last eighth. Spring Hill Farms Jamie K. enhanced his Preakness stock considerably today when he scored a handy victory in the Vulcans Forge Purse, reaching the end of the mile and a sixteenth three and a half lengths before Warbern Stables Sickles Sound, with Eddie Arcaro sitting still through the final furlong after glancing back at the eighth pole. Green Stables Powhatan was another length and a half away, finishing fairly well after dropping far back at the half mile pole, while Char-franm Stables Brown Booter finished two and a half lengths out of the money after setting the pace for six furlongs. Jamie K., who was scoring his second straight victory here, paid and stepped the distance in l:44y5. He had won his previous start in identical time on a sloppy track, but with much more effort. The son of Crowfoot was running wthout blinkers today, the hood having been removed at Arcaros suggestion. He broke alertly today, but was eased back off the early pace, then made his move with great authority when asked to run leaving the backstretch. Arcaro will probably ride Jamie K., again in the Preakness, though neither he or trainer John Partridge have made any definite announcement. The hurdle race was somewhat of a shambles. Mrs. Danny Marzanis Marvina K. fell at the third hurdle in the backstretch, spilling Jim Smiley heavily. John M. Schiffs El Arabi thend crashed into Marvina K. and he, too, went down with Pat Smithwick, while Happy Hill Farms favored Knocks twice also ran into the fallen horses, all but losing Evan Jackson. That boy managed to regain his seat and set sail for the leaders, but Knocks Twice tried to run through the last hedge, turning a somersault. Smiley was rushed to Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, suffering from head injuries, while Swithwick and Jackson escaped with bruises. Willie Jones Eastcell won the race by almost two lengths from Mrs. C. E. Adams Errolford. Thomas McFarland closed with a rush along the outside rail with the winner and it appeared that Frank "Dooley" Adams, who had his mothers horse on the inside, didnt see his rival as he coasted to the finish. Rokeby Stables Gentle Star was a distant third before Emmet Roberts Fleur de Joie. Eastcell paid 5.70.
