Look to California Board Meeting Today For Solution of Current Purse Dispute Hollywood and H6PA to Be « Represented; Solons Have Support of Governors Office HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 13.— The Hollywood Turf Club and the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association, locked in a dispute over purses, today looked to the meeting tomorrow of the California Horse Racing Board for a solution of their differences and the possible opening of the meeting by Saturday. Dwight Murphy, chairman, has called a meeting of the Racing Board for 11 oclock tomorrow morning in the Mirror Building, in downtown Los Angeles, and representatives of both the track and the horsemens group have been invited to attend. The board has the full support of the Governors office, though Governor Warren has announced that he himself will take no hand in the dispute. In the meantime, Hollywoods general manager, James D. Stewart, and its director of racing, Jack Mackenzie, conferred with trainer Jimmy Jones and owner-trainer Mrs. Harold C. Morton from 7:45 a. m. to 12:05 p. m. President Mervyn Le-Roy was in on the early part of the meeting but left for his offices at MGM at 9:30 a. m. | 1 1 1 ► , — _ — , Hollywood Park officials said that the meeting was very friendly and informative on both sides, but that nothing was accomplished except an exchange of ideas. Jones reportedly remarked to friends in the stable area after the meeting: "We have now re-established communications and are ready to trade prisoners." He also is reported to have said that there were proposals and counter-proposals but actually nothing was accomplished. Horsemen successfully blocked the opening of Hollywood Park, scheduled for last Tuesday, when they refused to race under a program which provides for a purse distribution of ,600,000. They are demanding a flat 40 per cent of the tracks share of the pari-mutuel handle and they say Hollywoods purse schedule is short of that percentage. Several weeks ago Murphy proposed a formula that would give horsemen 4 per cent of the first 0,000,000 wagered; 3 per cent of the second 0,000,000, and 2.7 per cent of all money wagered above that figure. Several days before the Hollywood meeting was scheduled to open, the horsemen indicated they might compromise on that formula, but Hollywoods directors voted to stand on their announced purse distribution. ■ |
