The latter held a slight advantage at the furlong marker and held on determinedly in a good effort. BASHAW closed resolutely on the inside and rapidly was getting to the leaders. GORGEOUS REDED failed to respond when called upon for her best effort. FOUR JACKS, fractious at the post, took up slightly when in close quarters at the head of the stretch and failed to recover. BOBBY BROCATO, away fastest, raced in closest pursuit of the winner during the entire journey, but failed to sufficiently respond when set down for the final test. GALLANT TASK closed with good energy in a sharp effort. ALTERNATIVE raced evenly through the late stages without apparent mishap. OAK TREE was unable to keep up. CHEVATION lackecf early speed. PRIAMS SPECIAL was shuffled back at the start when BOBBY BROCATO broke to the inside. ICARIAN was outdistanced early. YOUNG BUCK never was dangerous. ALPINO was always outrun. HYVANIA, always within striking distance of the early leaders, took command with a rush on the final turn and increased the advantage to win as his rider pleased. WILLIAMSBURG moved up menacingly when straightened for the final hurdle, then faltered when placed to pressure. BYNG was turned slightly at the start, lugged in during most of the journey and was unable to seriously endanger the top ones during the late stages. BATTLE WAVE was unable to improve his position when called upon. ETERNAL SON quit. SALEMAKER was outdistanced early. ROMAN WAY was blocked leaving the seventh jump and failed to recover. OPEN SHOW raced WESTMEATH into defeat to retain a slight lead when settled for the stretch run and, in a long drive, held BASSANI0 safe. The latter, never far back, came out for the drive, moved up boldly midway in the final furlong, then appeared to hang when punished. ARISTA, outrun early, was sent into closer contention when straightened for ■ the stretch run, then weakened. TOP BET rallied too late to become an endangering factor. WISE MARKET was outrun. TOM FOOL, away in the first flight, was under stout restraint for a half mile, went to the front when ready and, after sprinting into a commanding lead was eased considerably when victory was assured. TEA-MAKER raced forwardly from the beginning while on the outside, responded gamely when set down for the drive, but was no match for the winner. DARK PETER rallied too late to seriously endanger the top ones. EATONTOWN was unable to overtake the leaders and tired REPRIMAND quit. PACIFIC OCEAN never threatened. PRINCIPIO, cleverly ridden forged between horses when shaken for the stretch run and was up in the concluding stride to prevail over DICTIONARY The latter gained command between calls during the drive and held on tenaciously, just missing MOSTEST closed fastest of all and was wearing down the leaders. FAIR BROTHER outsprinted his rivals into the first turn, gradually increased his advantage during the run-down the backstretch, shortened stride inside the furlong marker, but had enough left to withstand STALK. The latter worked his way forward next the rail to reach near even terms with the winner when straightened for the drive, bobbled slightly durinq the concluding strides and was unabe to overtake the winner.
