Pimlico Track Observes Virginia Day; Cinda Returns to Races in Middleburg Shouse Homebred Miss Has Jack the Great, Radical and Sweet Vermouth Among Foes PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 19.— Maryland racing resumes at this point tomorrow afternoon with a program honoring the nearby state of Virginia and its thoroughbred breeders. Top events are the ,000 Middleburg Purse at five and one-half furlongs and the ,500 Virginia Horsemens Association Plate Purse at six furlongs. The Middleburg matches a fine band of sprinters and features the return to competition of Jouett Shouses Cinda, a four-time stakes winner during her sophomore campaign last season. The daughter of Occupy accounted for the Cherry Blossom, Colonial, Betsy Ross and Regret and earned a total of 2,175 prior to going amiss. She is now in the hands of trainer Bernie Bond and has progressed steadily in recent training. Facing Cinda in the Middleburg are: Danny Sheas Sweet Vermouth, Mrs. C. O. Schweitzers Radical, Cary Boshamers Yama, George A. Sacks Rare Knave, Jack Kroeses Esmero, Mrs. James Carsons Kinsman, Jerry Lynchs In A Spin, and the Walter Edgar and Mrs. Chester Lyon coupling of Jack the Great and Penocc. Radical, a Challenger II. six-year-old, won his last start in what was his third appearance of the year. He was timed in 1:11% for six furlongs and finished in front of Rare Knave and Penocc, who were third and fourth, respectively. Jack the Great hasnt turned in a bad race in four starts this year, but is without a victory. In his most recent engagement he was a length and a half behind Jeannie C. and War Age while finishing third and drops six pounds for tomorrows engagement. Yama and Sweet Vermouth were unplaced behind Senator Joe in their last, finishing sixth and seventh as named. Sweet Vermouths race was his first bad one in six starts this semester. Esmero, an Argentine -bred, has raced poorly in each of his six starts in this country, his most recent outing being over the local track. Kinsman hasnt raced since Florida, while In A Spin will be making his seasonal debut. The V.H.A.P. Purse is designed for three-year-old fillies and three of the entrants — Sally Catbird, Vexatious and Muscovado — will be striving to earn a starting position in the impending Black-Eyed Susan. Others in the field are Slippy, Cover Off and Moose Delight. Of the group, Sally Catbird possesses the most impressive record, having won locally while being timed in 1:13% for six furlongs over a good track.
