Giants Edge Cubs in Tenth, 6 to 4 Hacker Is Victim • Of 3-Run Outburst lrvin# Williams Each Drive In Three Runs for Winners; Sauer Makes Costly Error By the United Press The New York Giants blasted Warren Hacker for three tenth inning runs yesterday to whip the Chicago Cubs, 6 to 4, before 8.135 fans and hold fifth place in the National league. Pinchhitter Don Mueller doubled to open the tenth after Hacker had gone nine innings allowing only three hits. Then relief hurler Al Corwin beat out an infield single and Davey Williams singled to right to score Mueller. Alvin Dark popped out and although Hank Thompson was purposely passed, Monte Irvin singled for two more markers. Irvin and Williams were the hitting stars for the Giants, each driving in three runs. Irvin collected his seventh homer of the season for one tally. Corwin was credited with the win, his third of the season and second in two days although he worked only the last two and two-thirds innings. Rookie Ruben Gomez made his first Major league start and gave up five hits before he was relieved. He walked eight, however, and struck out only one. Sauers Error Costly Hacker could have won the game in regulation time but for an error by left fielder Hank Sauer on Wes Westrums fly ball in the fifth inning. Sauer caught the ball, then dropped it and Westrum pulled up at second. He advanced on Gomez sacrifice and tallied on Williams outfield fly, scoring the tying run. The Cubs left runners stranded in every inning except the tenth, when Ransom Jackson smacked his second home run of the year for the last Cub marker. The other Cub run came in the second inning on walks to Preston Ward and Roy Smalley and doubles by Hacker and Frank Baum-holtz. It was the sixth loss for Hacker against one win this year, but until the second inning he had gone 29 2-3 innings without having a run scored for him. Score by innings: R. H.E.
