Matthews, Rookie Tackle, Returns to Forty-Niners SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., May 19 UP. — Clay Matthews, outstanding young rookie tackle with the San Francisco Forty-Niners in 1950, has received his Army discharge and will return to the club for the 1953 season, it was announced today. Matthews also can play defensive end and is expected to fill the spot made vacant by Ed Henke, the giant flankman, who has been called into the Army. The Forty-Niners also announced the signing of rookie ends Haldo Norman, Gus-tavus Adolphus, Rudy Yeager and Sam Adams.
