Va., May 19. — A very heavy track condition resulted in an hour delay in the first race getting under way here today. As the horses paraded postward for the first race, the riders agreed to return their mounts to the paddock, with the majority of them refusing to ride over the track. Sufficient number of volunteer riders enabled the program to be presented, with a large number of jockey substitutions and a total of six scratches on the program. One of the best finishes of the day came when E. P. Prices Mr. Frostburg outlasted the fast-closing I11-Ce-Yu, racing for R. E. Gerth, to score a half length victory under the handling of jockey Sammy Palumbo. M. Hacketts Honour Student was third, four lengths to the good over Little Fang. . Six horses went postward in the five-furlong affair presented as the fourth race. The St. Clairsville Purse, for four-year-olds and upward, heads the eight-race program here tomorrow. Because of the heavy track conditions, horsemen were reluctant in entering their horses, resulting in one i . i race less being offered on Wednesday than is customary. Six horses will contest the six and one -half furlongs for the ,500 purse. The entries include L. E. Works Pipetime, J. J. ONeills Westward, G. R. Whites Royal Charles, C. B. Fishbachs ;lKy. River, Jessie R. Seabolts Sassy Shirl and the Char-Mar Farms Grace Mae. j , |
