UNITED PRESS 1 NEWS BRIEFS Awarded Medal of Honor WASHINGTON, D., C, Aug. 18. Pfc. Robert E. Simanek, a gallant Michigan Marine, who threw himself on an enemy grenade to shield other members of his patrol, has been awarded the Medal of Honor, the Marine corps announced today. Simanek, 23Tis the 36th Marine to receive the nations highest award for heroism in the Korean war. The Army has awarded 61, the Navy four and the Air Force one. French Strikers Defy Ultimatum PARIS, France, Aug. 18. Nearly 2,000,-000 French workers defied a "back to work" ultimatum today and the government, fearing violence, massed tanks, paratroops, infantry and anti-riot police in the Paris area. Premier Joseph Laniel demanded in a surprise national, broadcast last night that the strikers who have crippled communications, utilities, mines and factories all over the country for 17 days return to work today. UN Rejects Red Demand UNITED NATIONS, N. Y., Aug. 18. The United National political committee today rejeoted a Russian demand that Communist China and North Korea be invited here for discussions on setting up the far eastern political conference. Byrd Sees Disaster WASHINGTON, D. C, Aug. 18. Sen. Harry F. Byrd D., Va., said today that if Congress increases the national debt limit as President Eisenhower has requested, the nation will go "over the precipice of financial disaster." Mossadegh Forewarned by One of Plotters TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 18. Premier Mohammed Mossadegh blocked the effort to overthrow him because one of the leading plotters backed out and forewarned him at the last minute, a top government official disclosed today. The official said the plotter was Lt. Col Ahmed Montaz, head of the armored corps division and allegedly one of the principal instigators of the plot. Edward J. Flynn Dies in Ireland NEW YORK, N. Y., Aug. 18. Edward J. Flynn, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and boss for 30 years of the Bronx County Democratic Organization, died last night while vacationing in Ireland, it was announced here today. Shah of Iran Reaches Rome ROME, Italy, Aug. 18. Shah Mcinammed Reza Pahlevi of Iran and his beautiful empress, Soraya, arrived by plane today to begin life anew in exile along with ousted King Farouk of Egypt. The Shah and the Empress had fled from northern Iran to Baghdad, Iraq, after the failure of an attempted coup against Premier Mohammed Mossadegh. They flew here today in a British Overseas Airways Corporation liner. Asks No-Raiding Pact DETROIT, Mich., Aug. 18. CIO president Walter P. Reuther told delegates to the 95th national convention of the AFL International Typographical Union that approval of the AFL-CIO "no raiding" pact would be the "first step" toward labor unity. Edgar Sanders Freed VIENNA, Austria, Aug. 18. British businessman Edgar Sanders returned to Vienna and freedom today to start life anew after serving three and one-half years of a 13 -year sentence in a Hungarian Communist jail on trumped-up spy charges. Sanders was freed suddenely yesterday by the Red Hungarian government.
