Card Trick Under paddle At Spa for Slow Breeze May Fill His Hopeful Engagement; Great Captain in Long Workout SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. "ST., Aug. 18. Greentree Stables Card Trick, winner of the Flash Stakes on opening day, breezed a slow three furlongs in :40 today. This is news only because the Greentree colt was scratched from the United States Hotel Stakes, for which he would have been favored, because of a cough and fever, and his appearance under saddle this morning suggests that he may come back in time to fill his engagement in the rich Hopeful Stakes on closing day, August 29. All of the other Greentree eligibles to that rich fixture have also been coughing, with. Card Trick the first of the good ones stricken and the first to recover. Ogden Phipps Great Captain, who is eligible to Saturdays Saratoga Handicap at a mile and a quarter and the Saratoga Cup at a mile and three-quarters on August 28, worked the handicap distance this morning in 2:10. The route runner, who was narrowly beaten by Fly Wheel in his only start here, wore blinkers in his handy trial and reeled off the fractions in :49and, 1:15andi 1:28, mile in 1:42 and nine panels in 1:56, working alone. Great Captain gets in the handicap with 112 pounds, while he must pick up 126 in the Cup, which is at weight-for-age. The longer distance, however, suits the son of War Admiral. E. P. Taylors Canadiana, who will try to carry her speed for a mile and a furlong in tomorrows Diana Handicap, showed that she is still sharp when she stepped three furlongs in :35 this morning. Eugene Constantin, Jr.s Royal Bay Gem, who has no local stakes engagements, breezed three-eighths in :36 this morning. The hard-working colt seems to have appreciated his brief freshening and can be expected to come to Belmont Park ih fine fettle. S. L. Kopalds Donnajack, who has at least as good credentials as any of the eastern juveniles, went a handy five furlongs in 1:02. He is not a willing worker and had the older Alls Fair as a workmate for the first half mile in :49. Donnajack, who has not been seen since his good race behind Hasty Road in the Arlington Futurity, is eligible to Saturdays Grand Union Hotel Stakes, as well as the Hopeful.
