! . Bobby Brocato Gains Surprise Score in Sanford at Saratoga Joe Brown and Brae Burn Juveniles Wage Duel With Head Margin Deciding Issue SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 18. Joe W. Browns Bobby Brocato scored a convincing, though surprising, victory in the 41st running of the Sanford Stakes today, holding Brae Burn Farms odds-on choice, War Piper, safe all through the stretch. The final margin was a long head. It was another 10 lengths back to Four-Way Ranchs Way Thorn, who led Eugene Constantin, Jr.s, Bushers Beam by two and a half lengths. Ovie Scurlock rode a smooth and confident finish on Bobby Brocato, who -paid 1.50 to his scattered supporters in the crowd of 13,033. The son of Natchez required 1:13 for the six furlongs of deep, safe track. War Piper was the 16th consecutive beaten favorite here at the Spa. Bobby Brocato was scoring his first stakes victory in the Sanford, which was the occasion of a considerably more notable surprise back in 1919 when Upset beat Man o War. Willie Knapp, who rode Upset in that upset, viewed this Sanford from the press box and reported today was a. red letter day in his career, being the first since that afternoon 34 years ago on which he had not been asked to describe the only defeat suffered by Man o War. Todays winner is a homebred son of Natchez from Dorothy Brown, by the South American Brown King. He had won a maiden race at Belmont in 11 previous starts and the 0,200 he earned today gave him. a total of 6,500. Hollie Hughes Makes Presentation Hollie Hughes, who has been training the thoroughbreds of three generations of the Sanford family for more than 50 years, presented the trophy to Bobby Brocatos trainer, John. Theall, in the winners circle. Menemsha went to the-front at the start of the Sanford, but was quickly passed by War Piper, who was ridden by Ted Atkinson. In the run to the far turn, War Piper, Menemsha, Bobby Brocato and Affrighted formed a compact group, with Bobby Brocato on the outside and Affrighted racing on the rail. Rounding the far corner, Menemsha be-ban to tire and fall back and Bushers Beam apeared to be in danger of running up on his heels. War Piper continued to lead, but was only a head before Bobby Brocato as they sped past the three-furlong pole, drawing several lengths before Affrighted, Menemsha, Way Thorn, Bushers Beam and Night Mission, who could not keep up. Bobby Brocato took command just inside the furlong pole, while riding War Piper very close, but without coming into actual contact. Scurlock rode a chilly finish, appearing sure he was holding War Piper safe, though Atkinson was getting into that colt with everything he had. Their bitter duel drew them, far away from the rest of the field. Way Thorn finished strongly for the minor share of the awards, while Bushers Beam had no opposition for fourth money. Menemsha finished fifth, followed by Affrighted, who wore blinkers for the first time, but appeared to sulk after three furlongs. Night Mission was last all the way. Little Jimmy Mayer, 17-year-old apprentice from Louisiana, rode his second winner of the meeting and did it in promising style when he took the fourth race on Mrs. Frank Doughertys Whiskey Sour, beating Stephen Messanas odds-on choice, Jam Session, by a head. Young Mayer saved a little for the finish on Whiskey Sour and rode a strong, cool finish when the veteran Gene Rodriguez got to him on Jam Session at the sixteenth pole. Whiskey Sour paid 1.40 after getting the seven furlongs in 1:26, while Jam Session got a new home, being claimed by Mrs. Henry Bowyer for ,500.
