1 Washington Notebook 1 -By J. J. MURPHY Arcaro Moves Into Cushy Spot Eighth Running of Misty isle Today Deadline for Hawthorne Applications WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., Aug. 18. Eddie Arcaro moves into a "cushy" spot Saturday as the pilot of Native Dancer in the American Derby. No doubt he was a happy lad when trainer John Partridge declared Jamie K. from the local race, as he was committed to ride the Spring Hill Farms star. If Native Dancer is successful anyone wanna bet he wont be?, Arcaro will pick up about ,000 as his 10 per cent riding fee. It may be the easiest money he ever earned. It was unfortunate that Eric Guerin was deprived of the mount, for he is the only rider who has piloted Native Dancer since the colt made his debut 18 races ago. We read that the Washington Park stewards took a firm stand and ruled that Guerin could not ride in the American Derby. What else could they have done, they must respect New York rulings. Coming up tomorrow is the Misty Isle Handicap, a Tace for three -year-old fillies. The event is the counterpart of the Artful Stakes, which was at onetime decided at Washington Park, but which since last season has been held at Arlington. Although the Misty Isle was inaugurated one year later than the Artful, this will be its eighth running, whereas the Artful has been decided but six times. The Artful was not run from 1949 to 1952. Several fillies have taken both the Misty Isle and the Artful. Winners of each event were Athenia, Miss Kimo and Bewitch. Princess Lygia took the Misty Isle last season when jockey Ken Church registered his second success in the affair. He had previously ridden Miss Highbrow to victory- The field for Wednesday is, we bleieve, the largest ever to take part in the race. Warren Brown, Chicago sports columnist who is busy with the baseball clubs, got time out to visit Washington Park for the first time this season. . .When Dead Duck won the last race here Saturday, owner Dave Feldman and his side-kick, Elmer Polzen, made it from the rooftop press box to the winners circle faster than the race was run... The useful sprinter Vincent X. F., owned by Mrs. Ada L. Rice, got in from Cleveland. . .Trainer Kay Jensen has sent Dusky Comet and Holly Rica to Randall Park. . .Jockey John Heckmann, who steered Cyclotron to victory in the Clang Handicap, will ride the horse back in the Washington Park Handicap. . .Little Andy B., who comes from the same stable as Andy B. W., has been working well here . . .Mrs. Gladys Raines sold Feathertouch to Mrs. J. L. Oglesby. . .E. M. Hoagland is visiting from Lexington. Sold eight yearlings at the Saratoga sales . . . Clarence Ort-leib came up from Fort Thomas, Ky., to his three-year-old Doctor Heitz in Lview action in Mondays feature race. Track superintendent Chuck Miller, is notifying horsemen that all applications for stalls for the coming meeting must be in by this Thursday, otherwise they will not be considered. . :it was a rather gloomy Monday around here when it was announced that Eric Guerin would not be permitted to ride Native Dancer in the American Derby due to his having been suspended at Saratoga. The horse was en route to this track at the time the suspension was made public Great excitement around the winners circle these days. One disgruntled bettor hit Arcaro in the face with a handful of losing tickets; another told Johnny Adams to give up and let "his kid" do the riding; and third reached over the railing and whacked- a horse with his program at the same time calling him an impolite name. Frank Childs, who trains the horses of Abe Hirschberg in California, purchased Spy Defense and Berseem from Dixiana and they will be shipped to Del Mar to race in the Hirschberg interests, after which they will be sent to Golden Gate. Childs handled Bolero for Hirschberg when that sprinter set a worlds record for six furlongs. Hirschberg has had a number of good horses in the past, including Occupy, Admiral Drake, Blacks Badge, Canina, Dinner Gong, and others. Despite the fact that Hirschberg pays well for Continued en Page Forty-Three JOr for the Arthur Rose Stable in the Test Purse at Hazel Park today. Washington Notebook By J. J. MURPHY Continued from Page Four proven stock, he has never failed to have them "win, themselves out". . .Trainer John Partridge will ship the entire string of James Norris Spring Hill Farm Stable" to Belmont Thursday. Among the more prominent to entrain will be Jamie K., Dr. Stanley, Clutch, Bruce, and Great Fun. After making the arrangements trainer Partridge remarked: "We arent entered in anything else at Washington Park; so might as well go back East. We are all terribly sorry that Jamie K. didnt go as well as we hoped he would." Howard Reineman, Russell Reineman, and trainer Larry Thompson returned from the Saratoga sales and Howard departed soon afterward for his Crown Crest farm at Lexington. . .Native Dancer and Beachcomber will be sent back to Saratoga next Sunday...
