- Halter Wins Again at Atlantic City Holds Head Margin On Sweet Vermouth Cedar Farm Sprinter Backed Down to Odds On With Shuk Up in Defense Bond Purse By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J.,-Aug. 18. Before a record week day crowd of 22,717, Cedar Farms Halter this afternoon accomplished his second successive local victory while downing Arthur H. Bowens Sweet Vermouth by a head in the featured Defense Bond Purse. Slightly more than a length behind the top pair came Winlochan Stables Adopt, with Mrs. Chester A. Lyons Penocc a belated fourth in the eight-horse field. The victorious six-year-old son of Haltal, always at his peak over the local strip, was timed the six furlongs in 1:12, despite that the surface was no better than "good" following yesterdays steady rainfall. Favored at .80, Halter completed a saddle double for jockey Nick Shuk and enabled him to move into a tie with Sam Boulmetis for riding honors at the meeting, each having scored eight triumphs. Sweet Vermouth, a galloping winner last week after having been acquired at private terms several days previously, made an effort to steal off from his rivals early, then was wisely steadied by apprentice Roger LeBlanc when Rappahannock Farms long-shot, Winther, dueled for command. The speed of these two proved too much for B. L. Wililams Passemson, who soon called it a day and retired. Allowed to Race on Own Courage Shuk had allowed Halter to race along on his own courage in the run down the backstretch, then sent the Cedar Farm horse to the outside while lodging his challenge. Halter proved equal to the occasion and reached Sweet Vermouth turning into the home lane. While he moved to Sweet Vermouth boldly, Halter had to display his top speed to wear down the Bowen racer and was doing his utmost while gaining the head verdict. Winther had retired earlier and finished a badly outdistanced last. Adopt ran his usual race in the Defense Bond, breaking tardily and unleashing a belated rush from the outside through the final quarter mile. He failed by a length and a quarter to reach the top pair, but was easily best of the others while four lengths clear of Penocc. Following the running of the feature, John B. "Jack" Kelly received a beautiful plaque from Leslie Brown, representing the Treasury Department. The presentation was made in appreciation of the Defense Bond promotional work on the part of the Atlantic City Racing Association. Jockey Jimmy Stout, after haying finished unplaced astride the odds-on Mi-Marigold in the third race, came back in the fifth to score a front-running victory aboard Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Big Night. The Radiate U. filly hadnt raced in more than a month, but was razor sharp as she led throughout the six furlongs to return 1.40. The winner was timed in 1:13 and scored at the direct expense of OAlison and Rosemary B. DONNAJACK The Hyde Park Stakes winner worked fiye furlongs in 1:02J yesterday at Saratoga in preparation for his engagement in Saturdays Grand Union Hotel Stakes.
