Starboard Stables hard-hitting mare, Bated Breath, ridden by Robert Lee Baird, and Marion H. VanBergs Whiffenpoof, handled by Lois C. Cook, raced to a dead heat here this blistering hot afternoon in the 0,000 Hazel Park Mile before a crowd of 17,594. In an unusually hard-fought finish D. H. Wells Black Bantam lasted for third while R. A. Paracheks three-year-old colt, Gulf Stream, finished fourth in the band of 10 Hazel Park Mile starters. Bated Breath, a five-year-old daughter of Okapi and Delma Dunn, victress in the Speed Burners and Great Lakes handicaps at the local oval, shouldered high weight of 119 pounds while Whiffenpoof, a seven-year-old gelded son of Bull Dog and Way-about, carried 118 pounds. Running time over the fast course was a sharp 1:38, three-fifths of a second slower than Royal Tulips track record. Whiffenpoof Favorite Whiffenpoof, who went to the post favored, paid .60 straight while the well-regarded Bated Breath returned her backers .60. Whiffenpoof took command immediately after starter Byran Steele sent the Hazel Park Mile field away from the stalls in a "line break." Bated Breath was a close second in the run to the upper turn then took the lead before going a quarter. During the initial three-quarters mile, the pair dominated the running with Black Bantam an even and steady third. Through the home lane, the two leaders raced stride for stride, hitting the wire on even terms while Black Bantam ran third three lengths away and a half length on Gulf Stream, the Ed McCuan Memorial Handicap victor. Disappointments of the race were Gulf Stream, G. Y. Bookers Mad Hare, who could do not better than seventh, and River Downs Stock Farms Irish-bred Bay Bloom, eighth after displaying brief early foot. Sub Factor, a bay son of Flushing H., and Subterranean, carried Grace Kosibas silks to a popular accounting in the six furlongs First Graders Purse. Sub Factor, victor in two previous engagements at Hazel Park, finished strongly under Robert Lee Baird, who was astride his second winner of the day, reaching the wire with a neck advantage over William E. Schmidts hardhitting filly. Make A Note. Mrs. V. E. Smiths Lori-Jane ran third, a length and one-half back of the lapped leaders while the D. and H. Stables Laurel Springs saved fourth in the band of eight starters meeting in the juvenile dash. The Marion VanBerg-Lois Cook combination clicked for the second time during the week-end matinee when Missab coasted to a three and one-half lengths triumph in the eight furlongs fifth. Missab disposed of W. B. Warners Hasty Sun, the early pacemaker, as she entered the stretch and drew out to win with speed in reserve. Grace Kosibas Phaelater ran third in an even performance while Grosslight and Lichtigs Fighting Mood was along for fourth money. Missab, second choice at 17 to 5, raced the mile over the firm strip in 1:41. D. and H. Stables Meg March, a four-year-old Rustom Sirdar-sired filly, proved best of the five sprinters in the six-furlong Hygro Purse. Responding to a hustling ride from Howard Craig, the invader from New Jersey lasted to take a neck verdict from Al Wellmans hard-charging Royal Bones, while slightly less than three lengths off the top pair. Grand Hotel Stables Ferol S. saved third.
