Miss Joanne Gains Atlantic Success Intense Heat Cuts Crowd to 24,988 Invader Whips Mi-Marigold In Miss America Stakes as Odds-OnCanadiana Is Fourth By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J., Aug. 29. James M. Grieves Miss Joanne, an invader from the New England area, made an auspicious New Jersey debut when she scored a convincing victory in the sixth running of the one mile Miss AmericaJTurf Stakes. In a field of a dozen three-year-old fillies, the winner scored by two and one-quarter lengths over Mi-Marigold, racing for the partnership of B. L. Williams and Mrs. A. K. Gallagher. Third position was filled by George A. Garretts Little Flirt H., who outfinished Edward P. Taylors -Canadiana, odds-on favorite in the race. The intense heat which has prevailed here for the past several days continued through this afternoon with the result that the attendance was only 24,988, smallest week-end turnout of the meeting. Those who liked Miss Joannes chances were rewarded at the rate of 2.80 for , after Dick McLaughlin had steered her over the eight-furlong turf strip in 1:37. The winners share of the 4,050 purse was 6,800. The victory was the fifth in 10 starts for Miss Joanne and sent her earnings to 3,050. Canadiana Takes Early Lead Canadiana, swiftest Canadian-bred filly of recent years, and winner of the Queens Plate and the Test Stakes this year, set-out to make good for her numerous supporters, sprinting clear in the run to the first turn and being sent to the inside by Bennie Green. She was pursued by Darby Dans Fourdees and Tom Cochrane Stepper Upper early, with the latter moving into the runner-up spot along the backstretch. Miss Joanne, in the meantime, had trailedi around the first turn and had run into a switch in her initial effort to move by horses. She still had but a single member of the field beaten after the opening half mile. Canadiana continued to coast along on the lead, with C. Ewing Tuttles Amphi-spirit having injected herself into the first flight from the outside as Stepper Upper commenced shortening stride. McLaughlin, having been unsuccessful in his early efforts to reach contention with Miss Joanne, had no choice but to remain along the inner hedge and await an opening. Miss Joanne proved a willing mount and, while able to display her true speed only at intervals, steadily moved into contention on the elbow. Miss Joanne continued to race kindly as she was again, steadied turning into the stretch. Shortly thereafter she received her reward when the fillies in front of her moved off the hedge slightly, just enough to permit McLaughlin to move through. Canadiana retained a three-length lead to the furlong pole, then tired fast as Miss Joanne, Mi-Marigold and Little Flirt II. moved by her to finish in the order named. While unable to finish one-two-three, Canadiana lost many of the supporters she had gained in her six races this season, the most recent of which saw her second behind Sabette in the Diana Handicap. There appeared no excuse for her, unless it could have been the final furlong. The other disappointment among the well-played members of the field was Circle M Farms Revolve, who was narrowly beaten in the Miss Woodford in her last start. She broke from the extreme outside and was unable to enter contention at any time.
