Sir Sir Mango Mango Sets Sets Lincoln Lincoln Mark; Mark; [ [ On On Your Your Own Own Scores Scores Upset Upset Downs Evening Out In Gazelle Stakes Sister to Assault Length Clear of Odd-On Widener | • Miss Under Equal Weights | By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent i AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 19.— In one of the stunning upsets of the year, King Ranchs On Your Own became the first filly to defeat George D. Wideners Evening Out in the Gazelle Stakes today. With Bill Boland urging her on, the sister to the mighty Assault led throughout the mile and a sixteenth and staved off the closing rush of Evening Out by a length, despite Eddie Arcaros furious drive. The favorite, who had beaten On Your Own a length while giving her seven pounds on Monday, succumbed at level weights today and had no excuse other than being carried a trifle wide at the first turn. Maine Chance Farms Fascinator, who was trying to give eight pounds to each of the leaders, was only a length farther back in third place and a little xJore than two lengths before Mrs. John Hertz Happy Mood. 31,138 Witness Running Somewhat neglected by the sunny-day throng of 31,138 that backed Evening Out down to 2-to-5, On Your Own paid 2.00, .20 and .20 across the board. Her time was a moderate 1:46%, with fractions of :244/s. :484/s, 1:13% and mile in 1:40. Earlier this year, .On Your Own had won the Betsy Ross Stakes and finished unplaced in the Colonial Handicap at Garden State, then finished second to Evening Out in a swift seven furlongs here at Aqueduct. Her illustrious brother, Assault, had also showed a liking for Aqueduct, winning the Dwyer here, a race in which he was favorite for the first time at three years, after win- Continued on Page Fifty-Six j Gazelle Renewal To On Your Own Holds Length Edge Over Odds-On Evening Out in "Aqueduct Filly Fixture Continued from Page -One ning the Experimental, Wood, Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. On Your Owns victory netted 1,800 of the gross purse of 0,050 for her owner-breeder, Robert J. Kleberg. It was the third straight Saturday stake victory for King Ranch and trainer Max Hirsch, who saddled High Gun to win the Peter Pan and Belmont Stakes on the two previous week ends. Except for being carried out a little at the first turn, and appearing herself to bother Tessa slightly, Evening Out Kad no apparent excuse. The Shut Out filly, who had never been beaten, except by colts in last years Futurity, made a strong run in the stretch, but didnt appear to be gaining on the winner in the final 70 yards. Employing the same tactics that had failed when tried by apprentice Dallas Harrier in Mondays shorter Regal Lily Purse, Boland sent On Your Own into a daylight lead at the start of the Gazelle. As the leader turned into the backstretch, Happy Mood and Trisong forced the pace, a couple of lengths behind, while Fascinator was a close fourth racing on the rail. Evening Out was far back with only Condamion behind her, but Arcaro didnt appear disturbed. After the race, "The Master" said that he was trying to rate the 1953 juvenile filly champion, and this lost some ground they were never able to make up. He added, "We needed a little hick and didnt get it." Happy Mood Moves Up Happy Mood drew up to be lapped on On Your Own rounding the far turn, while Fascinator moved into third place as Trisong dropped back. Old Baasket was very much in contention at this point, followed by Make a Play and Tessa, who was in close quarters a couple of times in the early stages. While On Your Own continued to hold sway, Evening Out began to move up between horses, but was still in eighth place passing the three-furlcng pole, immediately preceded by Tessa and OAlison. Old Baasket had moved into second place, but soon faltered, while Fascinator appeared to be in a little "tight" along the rail, where the footing is a bit deeper. On Your Own widened her lead again in the upper stretch and reached the furlong pole more than two lengths before Happy Mood and Fascinator, who raced together, another length and a half before Evening Out. The favorite was much closer at this stage of the Gazelle than she had been in the Regal Lily and most of her partisans had every confidence she would get up. Boland roused On Your Own through the final furlong and the daughter of Bold Venture and Igual uug in valiantly,, while Evening Out, after running past Happy Mood and Fascinator as though they had suddenly grown roots, was unable to gain in the crucial final phase of the stake. Boland commented, "We didnt have an ounce left at the finish. It was her best race." W. T. Leatherburyand E. A. Roberts, owners of the Clearwater Stable, and trainer A."J. Pupino, won, the fourth race with Royal Coinage, a son of Eight Thirty from the stakes-winning Canina, by Bull Dog. The colt, who was brought up from Monmouth Park to make his debut here, was rumored to be a potential champion, with the result that he was made almost equal favorite with Angpet Stables Down Home. Royal Coinage took the track soon after the start, with Down Home forcing the pace, drew away when Jack Skelly roused him in the upper stretch, and coasted home with his neck bowed, six lengths before Edward Potter, Jr.s Drog-heda, who led Joe W. Browns Fabulous Vegas almost two lengths. Down Home was_ another length and a half out of the money. The handsome bay colt paid .10 and skipped the five and one-half furlongs in 1:06, the fraction faster than Trying required in winning the Astoria Stakes. He is eligible to the Great American Stakes here and to the Sapling and Tyro Stakes at Monmouth. •7-
