► = — . 4 Brazen Brat Races Past Cinda In Late Stages to Win Regret j Pistorio Mare Hits Wire . * Almost Length Clear of Rival in Monmouth Stake By FRED GALIANI MONMOUTH PARK, Oceahport, N. J., June 19. — Foiling Jouett Shouses Cinda in a bid for a third straight victory in the Regret Handicap, Mrs. Samuel Pistorios Brazen Brat charged to a pulsating victory here this afternoon. The chunky daughter of Sky Raider, operating under 124 pounds, the same as the favorite, hailed the pace-making Cinda at the sixteenth pole and outgamed her to win by three-quarters of a length. A similar distance back came W. M. Wickhams Winning Stride in the field of eight. Brazen Brat, benefitting by a fast early pace, covered the six furlongs in 1:10% and returned 3.20. A crowd estimated at 24,000, bettering the comparative attendance for last year, made Cinda a solid choice on the basis of her five straight victories, two of which came this season. The afternoon was the most pleasant of the meeting, warm and sunny weather prevailing. Brazen Brat, who finished far back in the Colonial Handicap, her most recent start, benefitted by the small field today. The six-year-old daughter of Sky Raider — Geraldine has now won five races in seven starts this year, including the Capitol and Rowe Memorial Handicaps. Apart from the Colonial, she was fourth in the Bowie Handicap for her only other failure this year. Victory was worth 6,200 of the net purse of 3,450 and Mr. and Mrs. Pistorio were presented with Regret trophy by Mrs. Howard Straus, wife of one of the directors of the Monmouth Park club. The decision today was a reversal of last seasons renewal, when Brazen Brat finished third to Cinda, while getting five pounds. Both mares had the same weight this afternoon, 124 pounds, which made them the top-weight of the field. Cinda Wears Usual Bandages Although Cinda was beaten for the first, time this year, she was not disgraced. The Amazonian daughter of Occupy, who is making a comeback after suffering a bowed tendon, wore her usual bandages on the front legs. The Regret was loaded with sheer speed, proven right from the word go. When the gates flew open, five horses surged across the track in a neck and neck struggle. From the rail out it was Incidentally, I Salute, Lillal, Blue Rhymer and Cinda. There was little space among them as they flew down the back stretch, stopping the teletimer at :22 flat. Brazen Brat was about a length in back of this sold phalanx, with Countess Jane and Winning Stride following. Nearing the far turn, Cinda poked her head to the fore, with Blue Rhymer dogging her a half length away. Midway of the urn, Cinda continued to lead, where the quintet abruptly broke up, as Lillal and I Salute were crowded when Blue Rhymer faltered and Incidentally took up sharply in the chain reaction. This gave Brazen Brat her chance as she swept around rivals on the final turn and went after Cinda. They hit the half at :45. Cinda was under a left hand whip drive by Stout and responded gamely, until the final sixteenth, where she gave way grudgingly as Brazen Brat relentlessly wore her down. In the final yards, Brazen Brat increased her margin and was drawing out at the finish. Winning Stride, who was far back, came between horses in a belated bid and was devouring ground, but not to the extent of catching the dueling pair. Blue Rhymer finished a tired fourth before Lillal. After the race Dave Gorman, who rode Incidentally, said "I am sure glad that I am back. They had me piled against the fence for a sixteenth of a mile and the filly and I were just lucky to make it." Church, on Lillal, commented "It was a little rough."
